Terrorists were brewing a fresh date of infamy
>>>>>>snip

Hours after the arrests were announced, Las Vegas blogger and network designer Darmon Thornton, writing as "dcthornton," proclaimed: "Wake up folks. Now isn't the time for complacency." In his blog biography, Thornton claims that the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks turned him from a "far-left Democrat" to a "small-l libertarian."

Even on normal days, the blogosphere is a petri dish of conspiracy theories, but when the code went red, the dish spilled over with wild thoughts. Some were downright silly, some rooted in real politics. An example of both: LynneSin, writing on Democraticunderground.com, suggested one reason liquids were banned on airplanes was to allow the airlines to charge insane amounts for their own beverages.

LynneSin also questioned the timing of the arrests two days after national security hawk Joe Lieberman went down in a Democratic Senate primary in Connecticut. "If this event had happened any other day of the year outside of the days after Joe Lieberman's defeat," the blogger proclaimed, ".... this event would not be covered ad nauseum over the news network."

LynneSin must not watch much cable news.

As the five-year anniversary of 9/11 approaches, many Americans — in particular those who witnessed first-hand the carnage of Sept. 11 — will reflect on a reality that on some level we have all lived for five years with a common question:

Will a new date of infamy replace 9/11 in the national psyche?

If you believe the government, terrorists were cooking up a deadly batch of hooch to create that very date.

15. Hey Chuck Asshole
You have my permission to quote me as being on record saying I think the whole plot was a hoax, I think the so-called "terrorists" will one-by-one get released due to "lack of evidence" (and likely with a little hush-money as well) and that the whole thing was concocted by Bush and Blair to get their approval ratings up. And when that becomes obvious to the whole world, I'll sit back in my chair with satisfaction knowing that I am smarter than you are.

Asshole.

36. Kokopelli, the flute player...
Kokopelli is a prehistoric deity depicted hundreds of times in rock art, some of it over a thousand years old, located in numerous sites in southwestern United States deserts and mountains. Often depicted as a humpbacked flute player, this mythic being has survived in recognizable form from Anasazi times to the present.

70. Just "the show" as USA Today doesn't qualify as a real newspaper
afterall... just an entertaining rag left outside hotel rooms for guests' use in wiping their shoes after glancing at the headlines.

Now, if she could get in WAPO or NYT, that would be something as they qualify as "the BIG show". They are actual functioning newspapers with articles written by career-oriented journalists who have degrees in journalism. People actually BUY these papers as they value what is written in them.

Poor, poor USA Today. Sigh.

37. I'm a "small-l libertarian", also. Our Bill of Rights should be protected
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 08:50 PM by w4rma
from dictator wannabes and toadies like the Republican leadership and the DLC.

I'm also a yellow-dog Democrat.

pro-choice, pro-guns, pro-small government, pro-*small* business, anti-cheap labor, anti-breaking the law (including illegal immigration and illegal wire tapping and illegally enforced signing statements), anti-Iraq and Lebanon war, pro-progressive taxes, anti-regressive/flat taxes, pro-education funding, pro-infrastructure funding, pro-science funding (and pro-science).

Imho, the Republican leadership *forced* the authorities to move in too early, well before the British police were comfortable with moving in, and therefore weren't able to catch as many of the conspirators as they should have, who will now no doubt try again with more knowledge about how to do this. They also have jeopardized the case against the conspirators, which is why Blair is/was pushing for the ability to detain folks for 90 days rather than conservative, well-vetted and long used ~30 days. I think he is trying to help stall for time because they *screwed up the arrests and went in well before all the evidence was there to maximize the punishment and punished*. They went in early for political, not security, reasons: To make a big splash in the news after Cheney parrot, LIEberman lost to Mr. Lamont by 4% in the primary.

Btw, cheers to LynneSin! :toast:

43. thanks wonk, I post the orginal below.
there were so many posts that day but here it is

I believe that the Scotland Yard tracked down and arrested 20 people who may have been plotting to blow up planes.

I believe that the people in custody were probably not Al-Qaeda. BBC said they were of 'Asian Heritage' which covers all of the MiddleEast and problem areas surrounding it. However, if the suspects were of Middle-Eastern heritage, I believe BBC would have referred to them as such.

I believe that on any given day there is probably someone out there trying to plot how to blow up planes or something else big.

I believe that our US Government had absol-fucking-lutely NOTHING to do with foiling this plot. We already know the record for cracking terrorists on planes and it's not pretty reliable

I believe that most of us have become cynical when it comes to these threats. We've banned knives, razors, lighters and a host of other objects, so they needed to come up with something new to be banned. Anyhow, banning liquids will allow the airlines to bilk it's passingers into buying overpriced drinks on their flight

And finally I believe if this event happened any other day of the year outside of the days after Joe Lieberman's defeat that this would not be covered ad nauseum over the news network. Joe Lieberman was their 'go-to' guy in the senate for the democrats; their one main proof that allows them to say "Look we work well with Democrats". Dick Cheney said YESTERDAY that the defeat of Lieberman would enable stuff JUST LIKE THIS and I believe that today, they're just emphazing that point.

45. Some of that I don't know anymore
When I kept hearing NPR and BBC (btw, I listen to public radio news, incase anyone is taking interest) and they kept saying "Asian Men" which as an American, I usually associate with those from the eastern part of Asian.

And I'll be honest, I'm still pissed at the last flight I took cross-country from Baltimore-San Diego where no meal was served and the only food was overpriced snack boxes with food so overly preserved it could survive a nuclear bomb. And they ran out of these snack boxes like the row behind me.

44. You know, as has already been said here on DU,
an officer can always time an arrest. Things are being investigated all of the time - many complaints/investigations going on continuously. The investigating officers can decide when the arrests are going to be made. Ideally, that should be based upon when there is sufficient evidence, balanced against the danger of the suspects continuing their activities.

I remember many times, as a social worker who worked with police officers on drug-related investigations, listening to conversations about when the arrests were going to go down.

Here, there is no doubt in my mind that the U.S. put pressure on Scotland Yard to make arrests sooner rather than later.

Am I wrong?

71. Referring to the plot-to-charge-more-for-drinks theory actually
That doesn't exactly paint us all in the most flattering (or logical) light. Someone who's never read DU will assume we're all going off on half-cocked conspiracy theories.

75. I stand by that comment
I'm still pissed about the overpriced snack box I had to buy on my last flight from Balt-San Diego. That's a 5 hour flight, give the folks a fricking MEAL!

Did you send it?

I hope you do. I'd like to see a fine LTTE like this - signed by a highly-reputable DU handle - in my morning USA Toady.

B-)

55. The writer includes a caveat:
"If you believe the government..."

And there you have it. All this nonsense about "August 22nd" requires you to believe the official line being touted by the government.

So that's the end of that for me.

64. "USA TODAY" is a right wing rag.
With that said, this is another example of conservative media bias. We NEVER here anyone in the MSM attack the right wingers in the blogisphere.

:argh:

73. That's true. Right wing blogs get no attention.
But, right-wing blogs and boards don't get quite as much traffic, either. Lefty sites get so much traffic and heavy usage, they get noticed.

LynneSin, or any other American with a shopping list of legitimate questions, why doesn't he ask his president why our borders are not yet secure, why our homeland security has received less than a passing grade, why our ports remain seriously compromised, why why why why why???

88. Way to go LynneSin!
I, on the other hand, am never quoted. So here are some quotes for the newspapers to use:

"I think the mainstream media is a tool of the Bush administration."

"I believe that cable news does not do a good job in telling all sides of the story."

"I think USA Today is a joke newspaper, and when I travel, I always refuse it if the hotel offers to give me one."

There, that should do it. My name is ellie. That's e-l-l-i-e.
