Rice: Keep fighting until you can establish "lasting peace..."?!?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060722/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_mideast;_ylt=AtOMtnuomUMfYFeyUBoUBuKs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3OTB1amhuBHNlYwNtdHM-

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, embarking on a diplomatic mission to the troubled Middle East, said she would work for "stability and lasting peace" instead of the immediate cease-fire demanded by much of the rest of the world.

A cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon would be a "false promise" if the root causes of the conflict are not addressed, the top U.S. diplomat said.

"An immediate cease-fire without political conditions does not make sense," she told reporters.

Does this make ANY sense at all?? How about the usual path: STOP fighting first, and THEN work out the political issues??

This rhetoric is unbelievable -- in every sense of the word!!

(Imagine two people in a physical fight -- two children on a playground or two guys in a bar -- would you tell them to stop fighting and talk it out, or tell them it's no use for them to stop fighting until they've talked it out? Makes NO sense.)

2. She really is the devils child.
With the * admin, AIPAC, and the neo cons supporting it Lebanon is going to be
really hurt. I am afraid this Israeli attack has been in the works for some time now.

4. My questions are:
Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 09:50 AM by Totallybushed
During the years since Israel withdrew from Lebanon, and peace reigned, why haven't these issues been addressed?

Why did Hezbollah feel that they must attack Israel, thus precipitating Israel's wrathful response?

If a cease-fire does go into effect, how does anything change? What will precipitate a discussion that will end in permanent peace with Israel still existing as a Jewish state?

Not that I don't think America could be doing more with a different administration.

A thoughtful response would be appreciated.

8. "top U.S. diplomat" (what an oxymoron) - this is classic neo-con
fear mongering, divisive and inflammatory, hate instilling language.

First the set up - the hook - call a cease fire a "false promise" to de-legitimize and invalidate it. This also serves to create anxiety and the sense of in-security.

The stage is set and we are emotionally primed to swallow any BS that they feed us - now we are searching for solution and leadership. Well guess who is right there to take our hands and lead us (off in the wrong direction).

Now comes the clincher - time to reel'em in - :
if the root causes of the conflict are not addressed, the top U.S. diplomat said. "An immediate cease-fire without political conditions does not make sense," she told reporters.

Now to me, this translates to "We gonna keep beatin yo ass till you knuckle under." Maybe she had something else in mind but,,,,

What are the root causes of the conflict? Explanations for that vagary are not offered by the "top U.S. diplomat" (what an oxymoron). I suspect in this case they are an elected Hamas government that the US has decided is illegitimate, and Syrian and Iranian states the US CANNOT even bring itself to talk to in a civil manner.

How long and what cost will it take before these "root causes of the conflict" are addressed?

It seems to me, that the US and Israel are creating and enabling the violence. It will be many years before the root causes are addressed and the US economy will be based on military manufacturing until it crumbles to dust.

10. Translates to: Kill 'em all. Let God sort it out
That is NOT diplomacy. That is the jargon of an arms salesman, which is what Ms Rice really is.

Next press conference, someone should ask her what her cut is.
