Israel pounds south Beirut, killing 18

By SAM F. GHATTAS, Associated Press Writer 24 minutes ago

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israeli warplanes pounded Hezbollah's south Beirut stronghold and struck roads around the country Saturday, killing at least 18 Lebanese fleeing the onslaught. Hezbollah rockets continued to pour into
Israel, where officials warned citizens that Tel Aviv could be hit.

......France decided to send a ferry from Cyprus to evacuate thousands of its citizens from Lebanon — the first nation to do so. The move signaled the West expects a drawn-out battle. The U.S. Embassy in Beirut said Saturday it was looking into ways to get Americans to Cyprus after Israeli strikes closed down the airport.

3. Nobody in their right mind...
would go to an American Embassy for help to exit a country. This bit of wisdom was imparted to me way back in the 50's while living abroad. In those days, we were advised that the Brits were the ones to appeal to - and we did. These days, it looks as if it's the French who are on the ball.

8. Really

To me it appears that they care about their citizens and their safety.

Is the US Embassy handing out duct tape and plastic wrap yet?

Cheers

14. The French were evacuating over 500 Americans in Africa in 2003 while the
US was too bogged down in Iraq to move their own citizens during an emergency situation.

Or did you not know that?

15. Has it been allowed through the IDF blockade?
Will it be searched on the way out if it is allowed through?

The IDF is destroying/blockading the transportation infrastrure to insure that their people are not transported out of the area. Anything they do allow through will be thoroughly searched
