from an email...
When I was a young soldier stationed in Germany, I had an experience that mirrors what has happened to our country because of our intervention in Iraq.
We were out on field exercises. I was driving a jeep for our section chief. We were in a forest with tall, straight trees about 80 feet high. In some of the trees were boar hunting stands with nice little platforms and railings. They were about 40 feet off of the ground and they had these, sort-of, makeshift ladders up to them. The rungs were small, just big enough for your hands and feet.
My section chief decided to climb one of the stands. He got up there and announced that the call of nature was upon him, so he hung his rear over the rail and let >er go. The problem was...there was a breeze. I think you know where this is going...let’s just say that the ladder was a mess, which left him with quite a conundrum.
He had three lousy choices: 1) stay up on the blind, 2) jump 40 feet, or 3) take the messy climb down.
Our intervention in Iraq has left us with the same lousy choices. I vote for a messy climb down. The Commander in Chief’s job is to lead, not to pass the job on to the next person. When the Commander in Chief was leading us to war he was right out thereB he even put the uniform on and claimed to fly the jet. It is time to put the uniform back on and lead us out. If he is not up to the job, then he at least ought to tell the truth. Tell the parents, wives, brothers, sisters and children of those that have fallen and those that have been wounded, that he was flat wrong.
Let us do what needs to be done. Let us truly make our borders secure, restore fiscal stewardship, mend fences with our friends, clean up the mess in Afghanistan and rebuild our armed services.
