After the Senate voted to pass the Free Trade Agreement with Oman this afternoon, Arlen Specter got up on the Senate Floor and made some remarks about the Supreme Court decision today. I didn't write down everything he said, but I have a few scribbled notes, as follows:
Authority rests with Congress under the Constitution. Did not give the President the authority to establish a military commission. The President has "no inherent authority". This affects the electronic surviellence. Violated the terms of the Geneva Convention regarding torture. Is getting legislation ready about what to do about the military commission (or something like that). Specter said he was having a meeting of the Judiciary Committee on July 11, to discuss and analyze the Hamden decision.
Hope this makes sense to you. If anyone else heard Specter's remarks, please add to this.
