that was the easy part now comes the hard part.

Dear xxxx

Primary Election Map

You helped us win the Primary, now help us win the General Election. Contribute today!

We did it! Thanks to your hard work and steadfast support, as well as the help from hundreds of thousands of grassroots supporters across our state, California Democrats chose me as our party's candidate for Secretary of State.

I'm so grateful for everything you've done -- contributing your time, your energy, and your hard-earned dollars to our campaign to restore confidence and integrity in our democracy and safeguard our elections system.

I'm simply overwhelmed by the tremendous victory we achieved together on behalf of all the people of California, and I look forward to proudly representing you as our Party's nominee for Secretary of State.

Even while we celebrate this exciting news, you only have to look at some of Tuesday's voting problems to understand why we need new leadership to fix California's elections system.

In Kern County, problems with Diebold voting machine access cards created "a nightmare" throughout the morning, resulting in many voters being turned away and told to "come back in a few hours." In Orange County, broken voting machines and technical glitches were reported at a number of polling places. In San Joaquin County, "people were sent away without casting their ballots in Stockton, Lodi, and Morada." Other complaints were lodged against Diebold voting tabulators in Los Angeles.

These kinds of malfunctions and irregularities are completely unacceptable. California should be a national leader when it comes to conducting fair and accurate elections - not follow the bad examples set in states like Florida and Ohio. And if elected Secretary of State in November, I'll settle for nothing less.

But we still have a long ways to go before that happens. We've got 5 more months to reach Democrats, Republicans, and independents across our great state and tell them why we need new leadership in the Secretary of State's office.

And that effort starts today. Please contribute to our general election fund today as we gear up to take on Republican incumbent Bruce McPherson this November!

Tuesday's election was a major victory for grassroots organizing. And it wouldn't have been possible without you.

I am grateful for all of your help and support. Now on to victory in November!

Sincerely,

Debra Bowen
California State Senator

P.S. Thanks to the 447 people who contributed in the closing weeks of May to our $25,000 fundraising drive, which allowed us to reach 80,000 targeted households with one last piece of direct mail right before Election Day. This was a huge factor in our Tuesday victory! Please contribute today, as we kick off the fundraising for our general election fund, so we can take our grassroots campaign across California!

1. I would say this will be one of the most important
races in the nation in November. All you people who have made voting reform your cause celebre', there are few more important places to make a stand than right here. She KNOWS about Ohio and Florida -- she's obviously done her homework on the Diebold machines as she mentions them by name. Not only could she rid this state of these Republican-backed voting machines, she could, conceivably, focus the nation's attention on this extremely pervasive problem and possibly more states will follow.

2. There really is nothing more important to the future of our democracy
than Bowen's race against Schwarzenegger appointee and Diebold shill Bruce McPherson for California Secretary of State. I say that without qualification, and I mean it quite literally. There is not only no more important election in the country this November, there is no other political development of any kind that is more important.

The Bush junta is now busily creating the newsstream narrative that will be used to EXPLAIN the Bushites' "comeback" in November, and, with everyone distracted by these red herrings ("immigration," "gay marriage" and Zarqawi--read, hate brown people, hate gays and kill more Arabs), they are meanwhile tightening their grip on our election system with the installation of MORE non-transparent voting systems (electronic systems run on 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by Bushite corporations--with virtually no audit/recount controls). Bowen's opponent, McPherson, recently ILLEGALLY re-certified Diebold touchscreens in California. Our prior Secretary of State, Kevin Shelley--a Democrat who was ELECTED to the office--had banned these machines and sued Diebold for their lies about them, prior to the 2004 election--among other things seeking Sec of State review of their computer code. He was "swiftboated" out of office in 2005, on entirely bogus corruption charges. Schwarzenegger then APPOINTED McPherson whose job it clearly was to get these worst-of-Diebold machines (the touchscreens) in place for his own and Schwarzenegger's election this year. (--and we were treated to the unfortunate spectacle of state Dem legislators hiding under their desks or outright colluding in Shelley's demise and McPherson's appointment; with a 3 to 2 majority in both state houses, the Dems COULD HAVE prevented this).

So, the gauntlet has been thrown. The Bush junta is very clearly out to turn progressive California into a "red" state by devious means. Nothing less than our democracy is at stake. As California goes, so goes the nation. Debra Bowen has PICKED UP THE GAUNTLET that other state Democrats ignored. They saw it--that glove on the ground--you can't tell me they didn't. Debra Bowen is our champion. She is one helluva courageous woman--and smart as a whip. We MUST elect her. She will likely have a 5% to 10% "thumb on the scales" against her, in the 'TRADE SECRET," PROPRIETARY software of the three major Bushite corporations involved--Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia.* We have to overcome that handicap. In California, that is possible. And Bowen can then lead the nation back to sanity--to TRANSPARENT elections, in which people vote and their votes are counted in public view. (Transparent elections are not that difficult.)

-------

*(Sequoia now employs former Repub Calif Sec of State Bill Jones, and his chief aide, Alfie Charles, to peddle their election theft machines--the two who first brought this crap to California--an outrageous example of corrupt "revolving door" employment. Diebold, of course, until recently was headed by Wally O'Dell, a Bush/Cheney campaign chair and major fundraiser, who promised in writing to "deliver Ohio's electoral votes to Bush/Cheney in 2004." ES&S is a spinoff of Diebold (similar computer architecture), initially funded by rightwing billionaire Howard Ahmanson, who also gave one million dollars to the extremist 'christian' Chalcedon Foundation (which touts the death penalty for homosexuals, among other things). Diebold and ES&S have an incestuous relationship--they are are run by two brothers, Tod and Bob Urosevich. Together, Diebold and ES&S "tabulated" 80% of the nations' votes in 2004. These are the people now "counting" our votes under a veil of corporate secrecy.)

(Note: Although this is hardly a non-partisan issue--given the players involved--bear in mind that these Bushite corporations are likely stealing/switching the votes of Republican voters as well as ours. Some think that MOST of the vote switching in 2004 was against Republican voters who were voting for Kerry in order to oust Bush. DO NOT ASSUME that Republican voters--ordinary people--approve of election theft any more than we do. They may be our strongest allies in restoring our democracy--as we struggle with corrupt Republican AND Democratic office-holders, and corrupt corporate news monopolies. I therefore understand those who seek to portray the issue as non-partisan. Vilifying Bushites may not be the best way to reach those who have previously supported them--although, who knows?--they may despise the Bush junta as much as we do.)
