LAT exit poll: Brown win, preschool measure defeat, gov too close to call
Exit Polls Predict Win for Brown, Defeat for Preschool Measure
By Michael Muskal, Times Staff Writer
8:01 PM PDT, June 6, 2006

Initial results from the Los Angeles Times exit poll show that the ballot measure that would have taxed the rich to fund preschools was heading to defeat, but the marquee race to choose the Democratic candidate to run for governor was too close to call.

The exit poll also showed that Oakland mayor and former governor Jerry Brown appeared headed to victory over Los Angeles City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo in the race to be the Democratic candidate for attorney general.

Proposition 82, the fiercely fought preschool measure pushed by filmmaker Rob Reiner, appeared to be losing even though Democrats were strongly represented among those who went to the polls today in what election officials and the polling indicated was a light turnout.

The major contenders for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, state Controller Steve Westly and Treasurer Phil Angelides also supported Prop. 82.

After spending more than $70 million, the Democratic pair were locked in a statistical dead heat to become the opponent of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in the November....

2. well that just goes to show us
here at DU. Most Democrats are not liberal. Which sucks!! How could Dems not choose universal education!? It really isn't surprising though. Many Dems I know are only a Dem because of one or two issues and are conservative on everything else. A sick fact we have to face.

3. How do you gather from this article, & defeat of a preschool initiative...
that "most Democrats are not liberal" and that they do not support "universal education"?

4. well
I apologize...it sounded like a defeatist post. I am taking into consideration more than just this one incident. CA voters also voted against affirmative action a few yrs ago I believe.I know many dems here in Michigan who are pro death penalty and against affirmative action. My parents are life long Democrats and are against abortion rights. My congressman voted for the Iraq war and there has been barely a peep about it by any local Dems. Every primary I work in ends with a moderate or conservative being nominated. I guess i just read this and it was one more confirmation for me that the Left really isn't all that storng in the US.

6. Truth of it is, the Preschool Initiative was poorly written. . .
became embroiled in scandal, and placed the entire responsibility for funding only on those who make lots of money. I've no problem with getting the rich to pay their share, but if something that's supposed to be important to us all truly is, then we should all shoulder the responsibility. I'll be amazed if this initiative gets into the high 30% range. The library initative, on the other hand, should pass handily.

5. strong Dem turnout amid light turnout and preschool init. defeated? WTF?
If Democrats won't carry the water of a little class warfare then the public sector is even more screwed than I thought.
