Congress getting massive calls from the religious right...have you called?
I talked to Martinez office again today. His aide was so proud of his stance on this, and that he actually was a sponsor of bill to ban gay marriage.

I told him that it was Mel inserting his religous views into public law, and that all those Dobson organized calls would hurt them in the future.

If you have not called, don't gripe. I called Nelson and Martinez and Putnam last week, and again today.

They are under terrific pressure from the extreme right...so call or don't gripe.

1. I e-mailed both my Senators, my Representative and the White House
"I just turned on my television and saw President Bush speaking about this amendment. This is a insult to the intelligence of the voters of this country. Surely Congress can find more pressing issues to debate this summer than gay marriage. How about healthcare, gasoline prices, deficit spending and oh yes, IRAQ, for starters? I'm disgusted."

I thought of much more to say after I fired those e-mails off. While I was watching Bush on CNN the Dow ticker in the lower left hand corner of the screen was going down steadily. It closed at -199.15. How long can this country survive Bush mismanagement?

2. Good for you. They need more calls from our side.
I think they are mostly getting calls, or at least they say so...from the ones who support it. They need more calls from this side of the issue.

3. With all due respect, I would guess they're lying to you
They know perfectly well what kinds of calls their getting. They just don't want good people like you to know.

4. I believe them, I know the groups making the calls around here.
Central Florida is, especially in the interior, strongly Southern Baptist. They are even pushing the issue that deliberate childlessness is a sin against God...these are Baptists doing that.

I know the others in this areas are waking up to all this stuff, but I fear many are not into making phone calls.

Both the DC office and the Tampa office of Martinez said that.

The religious right is very organized, we as a rule are not that passionate about calling. I worry about that.

5. Perhaps more to the point .... in this specific case ......
.... where the whole bugus issue is pure unadulterated pandering, woujld any calls actually make a difference?

Mel's not up for reelection any time soon and voters have memories shorter than the list of liberals with white house staff jobs.

7. Then you don't need to call. I thought it was important.
If you don't think it is important, then you don't need to call.

I live among people who think I am pretty evil for leaving my Southern Baptist church over their preaching for the war in Iraq. I have been called names by them, I have had neighbors say I was going to hell because of a peace rally we attend.

I am used to most all kinds of stuff. I called. I thought it was important that they hear from me.

You don't need to call. You may consider it bogus, but the people I live around do not. They have had it drummed into their heads since Bush came into office and maybe before, but it is worse now.

Will it matter? Probably not with Mel...but I tried. You say not to try. I did. You don't have to do so.

9. What you said implied I did not know what I was saying.
Someday you will find something I say acceptable, and hell will freeze over.

I know what I am talking about when I speak of this den of bigotry that is Southern Baptist.

There was nothing wrong with my post, you did NOT have to do that.

6. They care more about Gays than their jobs, their future or our country.
I could care less who marries who.

10. I stand by what I said.....
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 05:49 PM by madfloridian
they are getting many more calls from the religious right than they are from us. It is true on just about every issue. Our side is not very good about calling, I fear. We gripe a lot and don't do much about it at times.

I stand by my OP.

On edit: I forgot to say that each office is taking tallies by zip code.

11. One of my friends locally told me she called as well.
She agreed they were keeping tallies. She said they told her they had been amazed not to get more calls from Democrats on the issue.

Kick.
