Al Gore refuses to rule out running again
I often see certain DU members spreading the myth that Al Gore has said he will never run again for the Presidency. Strangely - this line always seems to come from people who are pushing someone else (like Wes Clark for example).

So I thought all you fair-minded folks out there would be interested to see what the man himself has to say about it ...

New York Magazine - May 22, 2006

Front-page headline: The Un-Hillary - President Al Gore?

Article headline: The Comeback Kid

As Democrats worry about their 2008 chances, out of the wilderness comes a stranger to save them. Wait a minute. That’s no stranger. that’s . . . Al Gore!?!

By John Heilemann

<...>

Al Gore stares across the table. He’s ready for the question. He’s probably been waiting for it since he first laid eyes on me.

What Gore has said about 2008, repeatedly, is that he does not intend to run, that he does not expect to run, that he has no plans to run. All of which, as every politically sentient being knows, is thoroughly meaningless. What Gore has not said—the magic words—is that he will not run.

I tell him that all of his allies are telling me that everyone they know is telling them that he ought to run. He knows. I tell him about people in Hollywood and Silicon Valley, New York and Washington who say that the country needs him to run. He knows. So what does he say to those people?

“I don’t want to give them any false signal,” Gore replies. “I don’t want to be responsible for anyone feeling that I’m inching toward running again when I’m not. You won’t find a single person in Iowa, New Hampshire, or anywhere who has had the slightest signal that originated with me or anyone speaking for me.”

So let’s clear this up: Why don’t you say right now, unequivocally, that you will not run? Then no one will have the impression that you’re leaving the door ajar.

Gore puts his left elbow on the table, cups his cheek in his hand, and audibly exhales.

“It’s really more a function of my own internal shifting of gears, not an outward coyness. It’s just honest. I was in elected politics for 24 years. I ran four national campaigns. I was first elected to Congress in my twenties. I was around it for all my life before that. And when I say I’m not at a point where I’m willing to say, ‘Never, never, never again under any circumstances,’ I’m just not at the point where I want to say that.”

Listen honey - none of us is happy with where we are right now.

Least of all -- Al Gore.

PS - I love the quote from Anne Frank in your signature. I guess that pretty much sums up Al Gore's whole philosphy on life, and why he is not happy where he is right now.

38. It was just an example
based on several posts I have seen here at the DU Forum during the past months.

However - I do accept it was mean of me to single out Clark supporters. I know that Wes Clark is a fine man and I'm sure he will make a great Secretary of Defense in the Gore Administration!

In fact I regret my original post but unfortunately the time for editing has now expired ...

So is it OK if I just say I'm sorry?

39. Is OK...You're not the first and you certainly won't be the last
to 'single out' Clark supporters. Thanks for the sorry.

But Wes won't be eligible to be Secretary of Defense unless you're not counting on Gore winning until at least 2012. I'm just happy Clark's out there doing all he can to help get a Democratic Congress elected this year. 2008 will take care of itself in time.

Peace, Carol

44. What a great article. I found this quote absolutely striking though:
Does he, like many Democrats, think the election was stolen?

Gore pauses a long time and stares into the middle distance. “There may come a time when I speak on that,” Gore says, “but it’s not now; I need more time to frame it carefully if I do.” Gore sighs. “In our system, there’s no intermediate step between a definitive Supreme Court decision and violent revolution.”

Wow.

I haven't seen that.

As a Tennesseean who's know Al since he was my senator, I can say I don't BELIEVE that he'll run - but that's not a "myth," it's an opinion.

I'm am so fucking sick and tired of Clark supporters being forced to bear the brunt of derision from everyone who supports another candidate.

I'm assuming it's because Clark still wins nearly all the polls - or at least ties with Gore, who, btw, would be my second choice should he run - alongside Russ Feingold.

I really have little use for the rest of the candidates because either I don't give them much hope to win a national election and/or because they're too corporate friendly.

54. i beileve it's Gore himself who gives reason to think he wont run again
many other candidates when asked say they are considering it. Gore says he has no plans to run. of course the options are left open in both cases to go either way. but it's reasonable to assume Gore is most likely not going to run.

why blame Clark supporters and others for something like this anyways when it's Gore himself who wont say he is considering it.
