But the plan offered by the Republican leadership today will not really help any small businesses gain coverage for their employees. Rather, it’s a wholesale deregulation of the insurance markets that will put consumers at risk.

But I am pissed off at Enzi and others for putting us all through this fight to save our medical coverage.

86. They need to get to work now
and come up with a REAL plan to provide quality, affordable health care for all.

# Health care coverage must be guaranteed for everyone.
# The health care system must provide the same comprehensive benefits to everyone and must meet the public's expectations.
# The health care system must be redesigned so that treatment and coverage decisions are based on evidence and best practices.
# All individuals must financially contribute to the system, based on ability to pay.
# The new health care system must be easy to use for patients and providers, and easy to administer.
# Any system of coverage must include these core values:

* Access. Individuals must be able to get all the care they need when they need it. This must include meaningful access to evidence-based interventions.
* Information. Individuals must receive information that is evidence-based, objective, complete and correct.
* Choice. Individuals must have some choice of doctors and care.
* Respect. Our health care system must treat the whole person, not just a person's disease.
* Accountability. Standards regarding care must be clear, uniform, and enforceable. Patients must have a right to sue if their basic human right to health care is violated.
* Improvement. The health care system must have methods for measuring what is and is not working so that the quality of care can continuously be improved. Individuals must have access to well designed and efficiently run clinical trials, and must have coverage of all routine care costs associated with participation in such trials.

89. How can I get the DNC to draft that into the platform? EXCELLENT.
It's clearly a winning issue. I noticed Durbin hinting at it in his closing remarks.

91. He's heard it for the last 3 years
from the National Breast Cancer Coalition. Breast cancer advocates were the first to put together a good comprehensive health care agenda.

I tried to get the DNC to put it into their platform in 2004 and also tried to get Kerry to use it in his campaign, with somewhat limited success. Sometimes it takes a while for things to catch on.

95. Could this have put the fear of Bush in them for getting something done?

97. They're still following the GOP lead
Dems have talked about health care reform for years, but they don't seem to get motivated until they see the GOP moving on it.

At least there is some momentum to get things done - its an election year. The trick for Dem leaders will be to use this momentum to their benefit and force the GOP to cooperate on quality health care reform. If the GOP doesn't play - so be it. let them go down to defeat and the Dems can get it done when they take back the majority in Congress next year.

92. Yippeee
I haven't posted here on this, I don't think, but I have on my blog. I couldn't get to the TV in time to see the vote. I sure appreciate knowing there's someplace to go for the important news. I was sweating this out, too. It was such pure evil.

I think they'll try again. They know that healthcare is an issue, but the Repugs can't quite let go of the idea that they can get over by putting out something that purports to help while actually doing harm. It's been their SOP for so long now.
