3. Once again, corporate bottom line wins over human survival.
Poison everywhere, even in 'organic' foods. What is the point to this?

5. I'm specifically worried about the implications this has on dairy
Cows are only required to qualify as 'organic' for 12 months prior to commercial milk production. Why? Organic is not just some marketing label to be slapped on a product that abides by arbitrary regulations. When I buy organic, I intend to support a sustainable business practice. I intend to buy food produced the way GOD intended it. Not some agriculture corporation that suddenly decided they could make more money by 'converting' their cows into organic.

11. If you want to send the USDA a faxed comment on this.
Edited on Wed May-10-06 06:11 PM by Agony
It would probably be particularly effective for this guy to see lots of faxes
you can FAX a comment (cuz it has to happen by May 12th) to:

The comments you make as below are to fix a loophole that exists in the wording of the regulations, not the federal law on which they are based. A few certifiers are allowing dairy operation to exploit this loophole. You are helping to close the loophole.

Mark Bradley, Associate Deputy Administrator
Transportation and Marketing Program
National Organic Program
1400 Independence avenue, SW Room 4008-SO, Ag Stop 0268
Washington DC 20250

Fax (202) 205-7808

In your faxed comments please include:

• You are commenting on Docket No. TM-06-06-PR NOP
• That you support the USDA effort to strengthen dairy standards.
• There must be a single, consistent organic standard for dairy replacement animals.
• Animals born on the farm must be raised under organic management.
• Animals purchased as replacements or for expanding a herd must be organic from the last third of gestation.

The above deals with the issues regarding organic dairies, you could also include the below shamelessly stolen from organicconsumers.org.

(1) All "Commerical Availability" decisions should be opened to public comment and carefully reviewed by the National Organic Standards Board. The Secretary of Agriculture should not have the power to make these decisions independently.

(2) Leave control over policies governing synthetic ingredients and substances in the hands of the National Organic Standards Board and the organic community, not the USDA.

12. kicked, recommended, and forwarded.
Please do the same.

My family makes every effort to buy the very 'organic' products which this bill emasculates. PLEASE take the 30 seconds it takes to go to this link and make your voice heard.

19. Give up on the "organic" label
And don't let USDA/FDA/whoever regulate it.

Form a consortium of serious organic producers. Come up with a name that is catchy but meaningless, like "Altria" (that's taken, but you get the point).

Then, trademark the name. Once you've done that, you get absolute control over who can and can't use it. No more lobbyists wheedling radiation and pesticides into the deal.

Just a thought, anyways.
