The following material has been added:

*** National Archives' Investigation into Missing Papers of Chief Justice John Roberts
exclusive: Previously unreleased report on criminal investigation into disappeared "Affirmative Action Correspondence" file from Roberts' tenure as associate counsel to President Reagan
http://www.thememoryhole.org/

http://www.thememoryhole.org/nara/roberts.htm

>>> On 17 August 2005, the Washington Post reported:

A file folder containing papers from Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr.'s work on affirmative action more than 20 years ago disappeared from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library after its review by two lawyers from the White House and the Justice Department in July, according to officials at the library and the National Archives and Records Administration.
The Inspector General of the National Archives launched a criminal investigation, which ended in late September 2005. The investigation was inconclusive to say the least, as the Inspector General still has no idea "whether the missing file was taken intentionally, unintentionally, or lost."

However, the report does add some new information to the mystery. For example, in contradiction to the Washington Post's article, the administration lawyers did have unsupervised access to the documents at some points:

While the researchers were reviewing the files an archivist was in the room with them except when the researchers made conference calls to the White House. During those occasions the researchers were left alone in the office with the records for periods of up to 30 minutes.
This report has not been previously released. It was supplied in paper form to Washington, DC-area researcher Michael Ravnitzky by the National Archives and Records Administration. All redaction is, of course, NARA's doing.

4. K&R. Sandy Berger got into a lot of trouble for something like this,
and while his case involved documents related to national security, this is still theft of public records, is it not?

5. I believe there is an actual cult devoted to Saint Ronald Reagan...
...headquartered in Simi Valley, California.

Disposing of these papers wouldn't be a stretch for them.

I hated Reagan with a deep passion, but I've met too many people who put him up on a pedestal, sitting up in Heaven at the right hand of God next to Jesus.

I knew there was something terribly wrong with this country when I saw Reagan in his second term. The press coverage was nothing like what I saw in person. I saw a tired old man who didn't know where he was. The television news showed a strong cheerful man speaking reassuring words.

6. Let's have the the following:
Edited on Wed May-10-06 01:26 PM by higher class
. the names of the 'researchists' from the WH
. the names of the Archive employees and specifically the name of the person who ultimately authorized the researchists to be left alone.
. a quote from the law that states that they can or cannot be left unattended
. the name or names of the people at the WH who were called or the names and departments of any other people called
. whether there was a follow up check to determine if all records were accounted for
. whether there were bribes or favors granted
. whether there will be intense investigation and news coverage of this incident that parallels the investigation conducted on Gov. Richards.
. whether any reference to Richards in pundit talk will include the quote from a government employee that the notes Richards took were unclassifed and previously released.

OK RNC and CPN let's have equal interest and castigation.

Let's also have truth in relevancy. Is the nomination of a Chief Justice of more importance than unclassified material taken to prepare to be a witness in a hearing?
