DeWine No Moderate, Sherrod Brown Says

The Ohio GOP and corporate news media has been pulling this scam on voters for the last 16 yrs or more - that GOP senators Voinovich and DeWine are "moderate". Its time someone called them on it. Here the Columbus Dispatch starts the same old crap of labeling any Dem running for Senate a "extreme liberal". Straight from the GOP talking points. They become very, very fearful any time Brown starts talking about minimum wage and trade issues. Watch carefully for the GOP to steer voters away from these important issues.

The race for the U.S. Senate in Ohio could feature a matchup between a too-extreme liberal Democrat and an independent-minded Republican.

Or it might be a race between a mainstream progressive challenger and a President Bushbacking incumbent with ties to Gov. Bob Taft.

It depends on whom you ask.

U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, defines his race against Republican Sen. Mike DeWine in the latter terms. While others label him liberal — or "out in left field," as the state GOP prefers — he calls himself a progressive. DeWine, he said, is not nearly as moderate as he tries to look.

"I’m in the mainstream on every major issue in this race," Brown said in a meeting with Dispatch editors and reporters, noting his opposition to the Medicare prescription-drug plan and the war in Iraq, and his support for importing drugs and raising the minimum wage.

Brown pointed to a study by Congressional Quarterly showing DeWine voted against Bush 24 percent of the time in 2005, but that number was never higher than 6 percent in any other year since 2000.

"Mike DeWine has been just where George Bush has been on the Iraq war, on Medicare, on Social Security privatization," Brown said.

3. It shouldn't be a difficult decision

but, surprisingly, Brown is still getting opposition from a small, radical fringe element with the Ohio Dem party. They become very upset every time he talks about trade issues, not sure why. :crazy:

That said, a Brown strategy of making DeWine run on Bush's record should win most voters in Ohio.

6. The albatross around their neck

Every Dem running in Ohio should remind voters of their GOP opponents connections to Bush and his corrupt crony Taft.

And every Ohio news outlet should be reminded also, lest they try to cover up the stench in their media sand box.

5. Brown rallied enough votes to defeat CAFTA, but...

...the Rs held the vote open for hours so Bushco could twist arms and round up stagglers to put it through. One of the flip-floppers was Steven Latourette (R-OH), now running for the sixth term of his promised four-term career. He promised to oppose it but sided with Bush instead of his state. (He's always been a douche-bag)

7. This will be a very interesting race to watch

As I've told OzarkDem and my fellow Ohio DUers before, I was late to come to the Sherrod Brown bandwagon - but when I saw him give a speech any questions I had about his candidacy for Senate were erased. His speech described why we should be proud to be Democrats because our party has pushed for things such as child labor laws, work place safety, public education, social security, etc. All of the programs that gives an avenue for those born into a less fortunate situation to make their lives better. He also encouraged all in attendance to commit to finding at least 5 people each - people that may not vote in the mid-term elections, people that may have voted for Bush or Kerry, but make sure that they get to the polls and vote for Dems this November.

He struck me as someone with Vision and who fights for the best interests of the "people". DeWine is nothing but a player and a Repub crony.

8. I think Brown would also have had a convincing argument if he had

asserted that Mike DeWine was a sub-human Bushbot.

It would be a splendid thing indeed to see Mr. DeWine's red vote removed from the Republican colunn in the U.S. Senate.
