Bob Schieffer takes a swipe at Bush and Rummy
Schieffer's fighting words

Outgoing "CBS Evening News" interim anchor Bob Schieffer has an opinion about who should be fighting on the front lines in Iraq. And it sounds like it's George W. Bush and Donald Rumsfeld.

Schieffer, who serves as CBS' chief Washington correspondent and host of Sunday morning's "Face the Nation," told the Daily News he's looking forward to doing more reporting.

"I would love to cover how the United States will resolve the war in Iraq," the respected correspondent told us.

"I'd like to go back to the days when the Roman consuls had to go out in front of the soldiers," he said.

1. Yes, and this should make us even more concerned ...
Edited on Sun Apr-16-06 09:24 AM by ShortnFiery
When people who are seemingly "centered" (Schieffer) or "to the right of center" (Gingrich) sound "an alarm" we are in dire straights.

None of this saber rattling will amount to any good. The world community has been afraid of the PNAC BushBotBorg Executive branch since before the invasion of Iraq, NOW more and more "conservatives" are finally awaking from their complacency comas.

Will it be enough to stall the BushBotBorg's war machine?

3. Awe, no worries, we've got Couric at the helm now to ...
do all that "straight talk" (Seals Rock!) journalism that our country so desperately needs. :P

4. Like I said, I'll miss him and have no intention of tuning in to
that mess. Obviously, money rules for them, not committed journalists, who are becoming too rare.

6. He is, what many would say - balanced -
Therefore, taking the least swipe at Bush-Co. is going out on a limb for most Journalists who enjoy basic respect from all but the extremes. Yes?

10. I believe Schieffer is family friends of bush
with his brother as a 'regular' (?) golf partner of Ws.

Leaves some folks reading/listening to his words with a grain of salt.

Frankly, it says to me that when he voices skepticism per bushco- its arrived at carefully (eg overcoming any unintended internal bias) and very interesting.

Generally speaking, I think Scheiffer does a better job than many of the news talking heads.

12. don't ask me
I didn't raise the question. I just explained to the previous poster why (context on this board) some at DU respond reflexively when the item is about Schieffer.

Please note - I said I think he is one of the better tv news folks.

Don't think I warranted the snarky response.

I'm not versed in his background - personal life.

I appreciate the additional information for perspective. :-)

9. Opinions are like assholes, aren't they.
I like him, listen to him, and respect him. I know about his supposed ties to *, but you should hear him lately. He's not a happy camper.

15. Oh please. . .
. . .I get sick of this shit. Katie Couric is a journalist she does not work for the right or the left.

I'm not here to defend Katie but I just think is so silly that we only remember when she has said things that have upset us on the left. It appears the right hates her to? It seems if a journalist is hated by both the right and the left they are most likely being objective . . .I know its a foreign concept to some of us but it is something journalist try for. They are not trying to advance one agenda or the other. See what the conservative Media Research Council has to say about her.

19. This is Howard Kurtz's (GOP mediawhore from the Wash Post) "logic":
"It seems if a journalist is hated by both the right and the left they are most likely being objective." :eyes:

Did you see Couric assault Howard Dean on the Today Show trying to make the Abramoff Scandal look bi-partisan? :eyes:

17. That's a pretty good observation, seems like. Schieffer has a good
ability in his analysis pieces, I think.

I like him on the news just fine, but he's at his best on that analysis segment.

18. Schieffer was the only reporter in the room during the police
questioning of Jack Ruby after he shot Lee Harvey Oswald.

I just throw that in there because it is interesting to me.

A reporter doing his job.

22. Understand your point, but he just walked in and stayed in during the
questioning.

Finally one of the FBI guys turned to him and asked, "Who the hell are you?"

Schieffer told him his affiliation with his local media source, and the FBI guy told him to "Get the f- out of here."

I guess there wasn't much homeland security back in those days either.

23. you mean when he says he just happened to deliver Oswald's mother?
"...Schieffer personally delivered Marguerite Oswald to the police station, and then he sat with her for hours-coming within minutes of a face-to-face meeting with her son. That is, until an FBI agent realized that the young man wearing a snap-brim hat and trench coat wasn't a detective. "It was at this point,

I believe, that I received my first official death threat," Schieffer concedes..."
