1. An announcer on Cardinal Radio station in St. Louis
He was talking really fast telling the news about Condi Rice and said "coon" instead of "coup"-her getting to be football commissioner (or something like that) would be a big "coon"-he meant "coup"-he immediately apologized, but was fired on the spot. Apparently he'd been on the job only a few weeks-it was his dream job, too. So sad for him, since it was obviously a fluff with no malice involved. Not like the congressman who called Barney Frank "Barney Fag" a couple of years ago.

DJ Fired For Calling Condoleezza Rice 'Coon'

DJ Fired For Calling Condoleezza Rice 'Coon'

POSTED: 6:47 pm EST March 22, 2006

ST. LOUIS -- A St. Louis radio station quickly fired a talk show host for uttering a racial epithet as he talked about Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on his morning show Wednesday.

Dave Lenihan apologized on the air immediately after making what he said was a slip of the tongue. KTRS president and general manager Tim Dorsey agreed the remark was accidental but said it was nonetheless "unacceptable, reprehensible and unforgivable."

Lenihan had been heaping praise on Rice, who has frequently said she aspires to run the NFL one day but has more recently ruled out seeking to replace retiring Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

"She's been chancellor of Stanford," Lenihan said on the air. "She's got the patent resume of somebody that has serious skill. She loves football. She's African-American, which would kind of be a big coon. A big coon. Oh my God. I am totally, totally, totally, totally, totally sorry for that."

He said he had meant to say "coup" instead of the racial slur.

Radio host fired for calling Condi a "coon." He called it an inadvertent slip of the tongue

A radio personality at 550 KTRS was fired on the spot this morning after using the word “coon” on the air in a conversation about Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Dave Lenihan was dismissed after what he called an inadvertent slip of the tongue.

Audio-MP3

Within 20 minutes, station CEO Tim Dorsey apologized on the air to listeners and announced that Lenihan, who had been with the station for less than two weeks, had been let go.“I don’t know what was in Mr. Lenihan’s mind,” Dorsey said in an interview. “I know what I heard. I know it was reprehensible...read on"

Terry Fox thinks he shouldn't have been fired.
