Did Cheney just use an ethnic slur on Face The Nation?
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 11:03 AM by quaoar
He referred to officials in Pakistan as "paks." Bush used the term "pakis" a few years ago and caught hell for it. I have read where both terms are considered slurs, especially among Pakistanis in England. And then I have read others saying "paks" is a more politically correct version of "pakis."

Anyone know the answer to that?

1. The 'Paks' are an ethno-cultural group

...primarily in Pakistan, obviously enough.

It's not a more 'politically correct' version of 'pakis', "Pak" is the name of the tribal group.

The term 'Pakistani' would also include a fair number of Pashtuns and other tribal groups, not just the Paks.

I didn't see it, though, so I don't know how Cheney was using the word. It wouldn't be a subsitute for 'Pakistani' if he were speaking about the people who live in Pakistan. It's more specific than that.

2. Somehow I would expect Cheney to use the word "Japs" and "Krauts"
if one engaged him in talk about WWII...he's such a tough guy.. :eyes:

3. That doesn't mean it isn't considered a slur
The "N" word and the name of the countries Niger and Nigeria both derive from the same Latin word.

7. His response of being the VP and not looking to further his political
career was a joke.....Cheney is too busy filling his personal pockets and his agenda to give a crap about the United States.

Interesting about the President joking about the shooting---His polls is at 37% and he shoots the only TRIAL lawyer still supporting him in Texas.

Now why would he need a trial lawyer?

6. Anything out of Cheney's mouths sounds like a slur.
But I think Pak is okay, I think the Pakistanis' news is called the PakTribune?
