11. Thanks for all the recommendations
Let's try to keep this quote on the page for a while, so people can see it, then go out and use it. As long as the reality-based community ruthlessly attacks the fundy ideology as anti-American, we can beat them.

There, in my experience, a lot of people out there who hate what the fundies are doing, but who are intimidated by them. If they see people fighting back, that will give them courage.

12. Nominated this earlier,but didn't comment
One the best and easiest to understand statements,
I have heard to refute the whole fundamentalist's attack on our constitution.

In a sorta off topic comment,
the new president of Chile is an agnostic and when she took her oath of office
There was no mention of God to uphold her constitutional duties, nor was her hand placed on a bible.

of course it goes without saying that in fundy world -- they'll correct the ''errors'' of the constitution soon enough.

but being the big mouth i am -- i thought i'ld say it any way.

14. While getting together with a bunch of Mrs. ZBDent's friends Friday,
I heard a LOUD woman pontificating about why "fish Friday" was actually set up by the fishing industry, who, at the time, was facing a slump . . . said that she was well-schooled by her mother in the Catholic doctrine . . .

I just sat and wondered if she was trying to convert or if she was breaking from the Church . . .

as she went along, I wondered how she felt about eating shrimp and shellfish . . .

28. The Fish on Friday thing has a longer history....
The Catholic Encyclopedia provides more facts than anyone will ever need!

www.newadvent.org/cathen/01067a.htm

Food TV ran Bobby Flay's show on Irish cuisine yesterday. He pointed out how modern Irish chefs have begun using more fish. Historically, the Irish were NOT fond of fish because they identified it with Meatless Days.

51. Ummm . . .
No. It was set up long before the Great Schism in 1054, long before some slump in the corporate fishing industry.

Odd.

22. Ba-dow...the power of chiasmus
Whenever these politicos get into it with people who are generally "writerly" (like a law professor), they risk such a disaster, since people who write a lot know how to craft their words for power. Of course, Raskin simply deployed the age-old stylistic device of chiasmus, but in the moment like that, and nailing it? Pretty damn good.

25. Not to detract from the beauty and genius of this response, but...
something else that needs to be reported as widely as possible is the fact that this complete ass of a senator would even ask such a stupid, narrow-minded question. Raskin beautifully conveyed how misguided this woman is. It was her effort which demonstrated her unfitness for office; Ruskin's job was to pithily summarize the demonstration.

At the end of his testimony, Republican Senator Nancy Jacobs said: "Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?"

In the Bible, when an ass spoke it was considered a miracle. Now it's senatorial 'debate'.

64. One of our governors or Senators
wanted William Penn's bible for his swearing-in. I don't think the folks in possession of it could come up with it in time, which is a good thing because Penn, like most Quakers, refused to take any oaths or swear on any Bible (or anything else), since he believed that his word should ALWAYS be good, and that swearing on the Bible implied that his word was less than his oath at other times.
