Sturgis Motorcycle Rally organizers are watching the S.D. abortion bill...
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 04:52 PM by rg302200
My family has owned and operated a motorcycle dealership and repair shop for years. Every other year we would go to the Sturgis Rally, but not this year. I emailed the organizers of the rally and stated my concerns to them. I politely told them that I could no longer support an event that takes place in a state that oppresses women's rights! After a few days I got a very nice reply from a lady named Lisa who agreed to forward my concerns to the town mayor. I am asking my fellow DUers to take the time to email her all of our concerns. The time is now for action, lets not get complacent!

This is her reply to me:

Ron,

I am going to forward your concerns to our city Mayor. He has stated that he will forward all comments to the Governor and Attorney General. I do understand your frustration. However, I hope you do realize that the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a stand alone event that is paid by the taxpayers of Sturgis. We do not get any financial support from the state. We will all be watching to see if the Governor signs the bill.

Take Care,

Lisa Weyer, Director

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

1. Interesting
I e-mailed 'em and haven't heard a word back. I'm glad you have, and that they know how we feel.

2. That is good news.
South Dakota has a population of only 754,844. A big event like Sturgis going elsewhere would have a big financial impact on South Dakota's economy.

8. That was my first thought...
But the fact that they seem concerned about this situation was very reassuring to me.

The bottom line is that people care more about their wallets than anything else. If they loose Sturgis they loose A LOT of money!

4. Good Job....This is what I have been waiting to hear...
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 04:48 PM by MadMaddie
The only way to fight these people is to start hitting them in their wallets....if this event is impacted negatively because of what the state is doing the event and the town will start screaming at the state.....

Good job I hope more possible attendees follow your lead.....

Hit em where it hurts...their wallets!!!

9. I don't know that Sturgis...
..is the bastion of women's rights anyway, if some of the things I have seen going on there is any indication.

18. Yes, but even if only half of the regular crowd shows up...
that's still a lot of monetary loss.

11. We are horseback riders
and enjoy camping and riding in Custer State Park. I just wrote to the park care of SD state government and told them we are boycotting the state because of abortion ban. We can do our part, too.

13. I wonder if we can get Ed Schultz to help with this...
He's a loyal South Dakota type of guy, but perhaps either he can move he and his show away from there, or at least help coordinate some forms of boycotting where it would do the most good at targetting those in that state who perhaps could be made to listen!

15. In his bio, he states he is pro-life, but has been very concerned
about the trend to overturning abortion rights (as amny of us are similarly conflicted, if not all of us).

We no longer get him in Phoenix, sadly, but I'd say it's definitely worth a try.

14. Contacted SD Tourism Bureau yesterday
Emailed them and let them know I already removed the South Dakota page from my travel site and replaced it with a big ol' BOYCOTT and link to NARAL. I had always kept business pretty much separate from politics, except some Katrina and environmental stuff. But this is too much. Not only abortion itself, but that they disregarded the Supreme Court which is outrageous in itself.

16. Here is another good reason to avoid goint to Sturgis:
They arrest 100 people a day during the rally. It is a big money maker for local law enforcement and the judicial system.

20. "Come on a stroll, leave on parole"
There are always guys in the South Dakota pen who planned to stay two weeks for Sturgis and ended up stayin 3 to 5 for something, usually drugs. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is just salivatin' during Sturgis time, drug dogs at their sides, on I-90. You've been warned.

But then, you're not planning on going this year anyway, right?

21. Been there, done that
I have a friend who was standing on the sidewalk in Sturgis talking to a guy who was smoking a joint. They both got arrested. She spent the night in jail and was fined $400 - for talking to a guy who was smoking a joint.

That pretty much ruined our trip to Sturgis. We won't be back.

27. Real life bull shit has real life consequences. Never thought of this one
Sturgis, the motercycle festival. These are hard core folks and I've heard about this. It's probably the one thing SD has that a national boycott would impact (people are already doing that with Gateway Computers for other reasons;)

Excellent idea. What a bunch of clowns...they'd make a woman die just to forward their idiotic and disgraceful agenca.
