9/25/04: Pickles decorates Lincoln Bedroom: "Gilded crowns, royal colors"
Whatever Election Day holds for her husband, Laura Bush is about to establish her own White House legacy in a bold transformation of the Lincoln Bedroom.

The pièce de résistance, both decoratively and symbolically, will be a carved bed canopy in the shape of a crown. It too has been sent for gilding. When affixed to the ceiling, the crown will support yards of regal purple satin over white lace, both trailing to the floor.

Gilded crowns and royal colors strike an unusual note in a house carefully stage-managed to symbolize the democracy. Neither element would have been acceptable to George Washington, who was advised to surround himself only with things that were "substantially good and majestically plain." Eagles were fine in "the President's House." Allusions to monarchy would have been anathema.

1. That sounds downright tacky. But of course, it is Laura and after
all these years we're familiar with her sense of 'style' (for lack of a better word).

5. Ya know, "Let them eat cake..."
Pickles and W both think they're royalty...this "crown bed" and all the tackiness that comes with it are proof positive of that. BTW, it sounds godawful...and I'm sure Lincoln would be furious that a room named after him would end up like that.

6. The Lincoln Bed had a gilded crown above it...

...in Benjamin Harrison's day:

Fortunately, Theodore Roosevelt got rid of all the Victorian crap in 1902 and refurbed the WH closer to its original Federalist decor.

I really wish that she'd NOT fuck with OUR house!:grr:

7. Real Lincoln bedroom would have a straw tick, and log walls
with a Thunder Jug at the foot of the bed

pResident Gilded Chimpee would derive enormous benefit from sleeping in such plain circumstances

Tis a gift to be simple

12. Laura is a nutcase
It's proven out over and over again by stuff like this.

Aside from it being wasteful while we're running at the largest deficit in history, it sounds tacky and something befitting one of Saddam's old palaces.

14. It's all a myth - Lincoln never slept in that bed - or in that room
The bed was purchased by Mary Todd Lincoln, but Lincoln never got to sleep in it. All the "Lincoln Bedroom" is, is a room with no particular historical connection to Lincoln that is used to house Lincoln-era furniture. It's amusing how the wingnuts attach such a reverence to this room and bed.

Laura's taste sucks

Tacky,tacky, tacky

Never mind the symbolism of spending all that money on tacky decorations while we are "at war" - she just has shit for taste and taste for shit

19. substantial, good, majestic -- Bush is none of these!
Not even "plain" -- in the straightforward, unpretentious sense -- though perhaps if one takes the word to mean "unimaginative".

21. Another reason we needed a Kerry win
I trust that Teresa would never have considered something like this. Even ignoring taste, this doesn't represent democracy.
