Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) on the Port Deal: "We're in a global economy..."
The arrangement brought protests from both political parties in Congress and a lawsuit in Florida from a company affected by the takeover.

Public fears that the nation's ports are not properly protected, combined with the news of an Arab country's takeover of six major ports, proved a combustible mix.

Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina said on Fox News Sunday that the administration approval was "unbelievably tone deaf politically."

GOP Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia said on ABC's "This Week," "It's a tough one to explain, but we're in a global economy. ... I think we need to take a very close look at it."

1. "we're in a global economy"

It's not bigoted and it's not bad business to exclude other countries from guarding our ports.

No matter what our general policies on outsourcing are, we should not outsource America's security to Arab or English companies.

America should be protected by Americans.

2. global economy vs. post- 9/11 world
Welcome to the battle of the BushCo memes.

My guess is post-9/11 world. Promoting fear and the illusion of being interested in security are Bush's best ploys.

3. This issue seems to be waking more up to the loss of nation.
Perhaps it will also point out that corporations SHOULD have limits, there NEEDS to be oversight and regulation and some things are better done communally, via a common government rather than insist capitalism is best suited for all ventures.

America, there are no nations. Your laws mean nothing. Didn't you get the memo? The nation/world IS being run as a business. People mean diddly squat and there is no such thing as security. Time to rethink blind obedience to the concepts of unregulated capitalism, unfettered 'free market' propaganda and all the political front men who preach it.

There are false prophets everywhere and their real aim is profit, not liberty, justice, security. They serve no country. They serve no people. They worship the idol of currency.

5. Perhaps we should outsource the Presidency.
At least we would know that the administration is not on our side. No pretense.

7. Are American entities lining up to do this task?

I'm sure Haliburton could handle the job.

8. He has a very gerrymandered district.
I looked it up on his web page. He has mostly $500,000 homes and up -- in Fairfax and Prince William Counties. It includes Mount Vernon (which went blue for governor).

His district avoids most areas of high population density like Alexandria and Manassas, but includes Woodbridge(which trends red due to military influence).

His district does NOT include the Pentagon (which was also attacked on 9/11), but the entire region includes people who work there. Since his isn't a major port district, I guess he thinks he can say this without a backlash.

Of the three congressional districts in Northern Virginia, the 8th concentrates the Democrats and the 10th and the 11th dilute them. I propose that gerrymandering be minimized in the 2010 redistricting. If a district is on three sides of a city, it should include that city. If a district can be split along county lines, that is where it should be split. Make each district as round or as square as it can be made but allow for natural borders like major highways or bodies of water or county lines.

I also hope those of you in his district will work hard at defeating Tom Davis. I believe his opponent is named Hurst. Get out there and help Hurst win.

9. Couldn't edit. Additional info...
My apologies, Tom Davis has TWO opponents. Get to know them, vote in the primary and support the man who will beat Davis in the fall.
