Bush administration in crisis -- Abramoff lies exposed in pictures
With the recent photo released, it's all coming together (recent and current reports):

President Bush shaking hands in 2001 with Chief Raul Garza of the Kickapoo tribe of Texas. In the background at left is the lobbyist Jack Abramoff; Karl Rove, the president's top adviser, is at the right.

Photograph shows Bush meeting now-Governor of Marianas Islands, who helped Abramoff get millions

Published: January 23, 2006

On the heels of a Time Magazine article revealing the existence of photographs of President George W. Bush with fallen conservative superlobbyist Jack Abramoff, RAW STORY has found another photograph of Bush with a leading Abramoff client.

The President appears in a snapshot with Beningo Repeki Fitial, then-Speaker of the House for the Northern Marianas Islands. Fitial is vice president of Tan Holdings – the family conglomerate which owns numerous clothing factories on the islands that were a routine stop for Abramoff-flown lawmakers. Tan Holdings was one of the firms which made up the Saipan Garment Manufacturers’ Association, an Abramoff client.

He was also, incidentally, chairman of the Bush for President Committee for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

The photograph appears to have been taken the same day Bush met Raul Garza Sr., the former chairman of the Texas Kickapoo tribe who Time says was photographed with Bush. Abramoff, once the largest lobbyist in Washington, pled guilty to bribery charges earlier this month and his work has drawn new scrutiny to D.C.'s circular produced by the group. Norquist led Abramoff’s successful campaign to become chairman of the national College Republicans in the 1980s. [br />

Mystery firm linked to US lobbyist scandal

US government investigators probing Washington's explosive Congressional bribery scandal centered on disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff recently visited Hong Kong, according to a witness interviewed by the authorities.

US government investigators probing Washington's explosive Congressional bribery scandal centered on disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff recently visited Hong Kong, according to a witness interviewed by the authorities.

The investigators reportedly are chasing convoluted money trails leading to Abramoff and government officials he sought to influence.

Among the likely subjects of interest here is a previously unknown company called Rose Garden Holdings. In May 2002, Abramoff notified the US Senate that Rose Garden had hired him and Greenberg Traurig, his firm at the time, to represent Rose Garden's "interests before federal agencies and US Congress."

Abramoff recorded Rose Garden's address as a luxury flat in Tai Hang, above Causeway Bay, and its business as international trade. Over the next year and a half, the records show, Rose Garden paid Greenberg Traurig US$1.4 million (HK$10.92 million) for putting its case to the Senate, House of Representatives and US Department of Labor.

White House Caught In Lie About 2001 Abramoff Meeting

On May 9, 2001, Bush met with 21 state legislators, Abramoff, and several of his tribal clients (including the Coushattas and the Kickapoos). Abramoff charged his clients $25,000 for arranging the meeting.

In June, the AP reported that White House spokeswoman Erin Healy denied Abramoff’s attendance at the meeting:

The White House has no record of the Coushattas or Abramoff at the May 9, 2001, meeting, spokeswoman Erin Healy said. Records show representatives from the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas and the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana met with Bush, along with 21 state legislators, Healy said.

But TIME now has a photo from the May 9 meeting, in which “Bush appears with Abramoff, several unidentified people and Raul Garza Sr., a Texan Abramoff represented who was then chairman of the Kickapoo Indians.”

The Pimping of the Presidency

Jack Abramoff and Grover Norquist Billing Clients for Face Time with G.W. Bush
BY LOU DUBOSE
Four months after he took the oath of office in 2001, President George W. Bush was the attraction, and the White House the venue, for a fundraiser organized by the alleged perpetrator of the largest billing fraud in the history of corporate lobbying. In May 2001, Jack Abramoff’s lobbying client book was worth $4.1 million in annual billing for the Greenberg Traurig law firm. He was a friend of Bush advisor Karl Rove. He was a Bush “Pioneer,” delivering at least $100,000 in bundled contributions to the 2000 campaign. He had just concluded his work on the Bush Transition Team as an advisor to the Department of the Interior. He had sent his personal assistant Susan Ralston to the White House to work as Rove’s personal assistant. He was a close friend, advisor, and high-dollar fundraiser for the most powerful man in Congress, Tom DeLay. Abramoff was so closely tied to the Bush Administration that he could, and did, charge two of his clients $25,000 for a White House lunch date and a meeting with the President. From the same two clients he took to the White House in May 2001, Abramoff also obtained $2.5 million in contributions for a non-profit foundation he and his wife operated.

Charity Begins at Home...Abramoff's Home

Jack Abramoff has been a very bad boy, according to the LATimes. And he's not the only one: boards of directors of charitable organizations have a fiduciary obligation to ensure that the donations given to their groups are used in an appropriate, charitable fashion.

By using these groups as a political money laundering base of operations, Abramoff abused the integrity of the charitable process. By allowing him to do so without asking all the appropriate questions, the folks running these charities are now in for a world of headaches -- and they ought to be.

Abramoff's Charity Began at Home

The lobbyist admits he used nonprofits to evade taxes, pad his pockets and bribe officials.

By Chuck Neubauer and Richard B. Schmitt, Times Staff Writers

WASHINGTON — In his own way, disgraced super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff engaged in many charitable endeavors over the course of his decade-long career as a Washington insider.

There was the time he laundered money through a religious group's accounts to try to bribe a congressional aide. He diverted funds from a youth athletic foundation to bankroll a golf junket for a congressman and to bolster the bank account of his Washington restaurant. He used two other nonprofits to line his own pockets with millions of dollars defrauded from clients.

Charities are supposed to advance the public interest, which is why they aren't taxed. But Abramoff, by his own admission, used them to evade taxes, enrich himself and bribe public officials, according to a plea agreement he signed with federal prosecutors in January.

"One of the most disturbing elements of this whole sordid story is the blatant misuse of charities in a scheme to peddle political influence," said Mark Everson, commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service.

6. Ouch-ez-vous! Ouch indeed! Kicking and Recommending - the 5th one!
The hits just keep on a'comin', don't they?

This now makes me think of the Smoking Gun people and that "Million Little Pieces" guy. I wonder how many blogs are digging for photos - to see if they find gold nuggets?

Is Raw Story doing more digging, too?

And notice, if you will, in the second photo (where our friend Abramoff is in the background yet again - kind of like a Where's Waldo creature), it looks like a receiving line, with bush moving down the line shaking everyone's hand in turn. So eventually he would have worked his way down to Jackie-boy. Who, by the way, having raised at least 100-THOUSAND dollars for the bush campaign, qualifies as a "bush Pioneer." Don't think for a single nanosecond that bush didn't know every last Pioneer on the planet, and enough trivia about them to be able to make nice, folksy small-talk with 'em at all the MANY various receptions and cocktail parties and photo ops and shake-'em-down sessions they ALL attended together. There is NO WAY bush would forget a "bush Pioneer." They were his leading lights, and the colonels and generals in his campaign army.

8. No worse than all of his other lies
he'll skate on this too - pretty soon Evan Bayh or Lieberman will announce "I don't think we should pursue this". McClellan will say "President Clinton did this too". Tweety will say, "Doesn't the president look manly in that picture?" Andy Coulter will say, "I think we should kill all registered Dems". And things will be back to normal.

Abramoff says he chatted with Bush

The fallen lobbyist told a magazine editor that he spoke with the President almost a dozen times.
By Pete YostAssociated Press

WASHINGTON - Jack Abramoff had brief conversations with President Bush almost a dozen times, and Bush knew him well enough to make joking references to Abramoff's family, according to an e-mail the fallen lobbyist sent to a magazine editor.

Bush "joked with me about a bunch of things, including details of my kids," Abramoff wrote of their contacts.

The e-mail's recipient, Washingtonian magazine editor Kim Eisler, confirmed its contents.

Bush's contacts with Abramoff - who has pleaded guilty in a fraud and bribery case and is cooperating with a public-corruption investigation - have become an issue because Bush has said he does not recall ever meeting the lobbyist.

Abramoff Said to Claim Close Ties to Rove

By JOHN SOLOMON and PETE YOST, Associated Press Writers
12 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Three former associates of Jack Abramoff said Monday that the now-disgraced lobbyist frequently told them during his lobbying work he had strong ties to the White House through presidential confidant Karl Rove.

The White House said Monday that Rove remembers meeting Abramoff at a 1990s political meeting and considered the lobbyist a "casual acquaintance" since President Bush took office in 2001.

New questions have arisen about Abramoff's ties to the White House since a photo emerged over the weekend showing Abramoff with Bush. Also surfacing were the contents of an e-mail from Abramoff to Washingtonian magazine claiming he had met briefly with the president nearly a dozen times.

One said he was present when Abramoff took a call from Rove's office to confirm a White House meeting had been approved between Malaysia's prime minister and Bush in May 2002. Abramoff was being paid by Malaysia for helping it in Washington, according to evidence the Senate has made public.
