Bad Feeling in the Body Politic

Tuesday, January 31, 2006; 6:00 PM

Minutes after yesterday's confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) rushed to the Senate television studio to declare it "a happy day for the United States Senate." But instead of happy faces, the Republican senators lined up behind McConnell wore the grave expressions of sore winners.

Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (Utah) said Alito had "been treated in a despicable fashion. . . . I think it's despicable." He added: "We should get rid of this really repugnant partisanship."

Sen. Jeff Sessions (Ala.) took off after Democratic "divisiveness" and their allegiance to "outside, activist, hard-left groups." ...

Goes to show how the Republicans respond to capitulation and compromise, this is why we need to fight not give in

1. Fight? What's that?
We haven't learned that one yet. We only know "roll over" and "bark".

3. The Dems acted like pussies and still
get accused of being partisan. This would teach anybody with even a vestige of a spine not to give these pieces of shit one inch. This nomination should have been filibustered down to the last gasp, they would still be making the same accusations but at least the Dems would be able to feel like they actually stood for something. Now the dumshits out there in jesusland are gonna think they are partisan obstructionists when in fact they are invertebrate enablers for * and crew.

4. Oh, shit! Fritz must have been reading our posts:
"They don't have any of the convictions . . . you have a party with no principles and no convictions and no ideas."

He could have taken that out of one of my posts!

6. Will he still think it's
"despicable" when Alito, in concert with his fascist buddies on the court, begins to disallow legitimate challenges to Bush's presidential power overreaching, overriding the constitutional balance of powers and system of checks and balances, and the imperial presidency finally begins to emerge?

Wait a minute-never mind, don't answer that, this is Hatch we're talking about, after all.

Fear and hate. Fear and hate. Fear and hate. Fear and hate.

If we were all their slaves they would complain about how much they have to feed us.

10. I think they're upset. And I think that all this righteous indignation is
the sign of a bully. And we all know that you have to hit the bully square in the nose to make them understand that they've gone too far. All this autocratic bullshit is the thing that abusive households are made of.

17. Alito was treated in a despicable fashion?
What was the worse thing anyone said? That he belonged to a club that had discriminary views years ago? Because - he did. He had to listen to 20 minute Biden questions? small price to pay for a life time job.

I didn't hear all the speeches - but of those I heard - they were nothing compared to the character assignation they supported of various Democrats. Kerry's speeches were based entirely on his legal judgements - Kerry conceeded that he was a nice guy, intelligent and a competent lawyer. That he thought Alito's legal judgement was wrong and explained his objections beautifully is not despicable but what Kerry and all the Democrats were entitled to do. Kennedy spoke of traditions that would be changed - not despicable.
