Remember the parent who assaulted the teacher for molesting his kid?
HIS KID LIED. Now Dad is headed for prison and his daughter might be expelled.

Girl's story doesn't check out

School officials say a girl made accusations to get revenge on a teacher; her dad slugged him.

MANATEE COUNTY -- A teacher has a sore jaw. A student could get kicked out of school. Her father is facing a felony. And the school system says it all happened over a lie.

The dad, Dave F. Swafford, barged into a Lakewood Ranch High School classroom this week and decked the teacher's assistant after accusing him of inappropriately touching his daughter. After bailing out of jail, Swafford went on national TV to say he was merely protecting his 15-year-old daughter who had accused the teacher, Deon W. Mathis, of harassing her last week.

Swafford continues to stand by his daughter's story.

But school officials said Thursday the girl made up the allegations to take revenge on a teacher who caught her misbehaving.

Manatee County Schools Superintendent Roger Dearing said the district has statements from several students and footage from a school security camera that prove the teacher's assistant did nothing wrong.

1. This stuff pisses me off!
It's like when someone lies about being raped. It makes people wonder how many other cases of reported molestation or rape are also lies. Pretty soon people are reluctant to come forward at all because they're afraid of being called a liar.

3. No to mention the damage it does to schools.
It makes me mad that the first story was all over the media but there is little mention of this follow up which proves the father is a hothead and his daughter is a little liar.

6. Yep. One of the most damaging lies that can be told.
Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 02:29 AM by TahitiNut
It damages the person falsely accused forever. It damages the family of the liar. It damages the school system. And it damages EVERY person who is the victim of a sexual assault. It might even marginally increase the number of rapes, as the rapist believes themselves less likely to be convicted.

Lies are about the worst of crimes we commit on each other. (Thanks, Paula.) :puke:

27. There is no excuse for taking the law into your own hands.
I know in GOP land it is the accepted norm but in the America I grew up in and love there is Law and Order and that does not include taking the Law into your own hands..The man deserves some punishment. Every person deserves a fair trial and this father did not give the man a chance to rebut the charges.

5. Thank goodness for security cameras.
The TA could have been labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life. Tragic on a lot of levels but I'm glad they found out the girl was lying.

11. In MO, teachers are guilty even if proven innocent
If a teacher is reported to the child abuse hotline, the report stays in our file for 5 years, even if the investigation finds no abuse happened.

11 yo girl recants that her mother bf sexually abused her 9 months after the guy is in jail. She passes a lie detector that what she is now saying it true. And now 6 years later the Va SC just ruled there is not enough evidence to prove he did not abuse her :grr:

Looks like he did a really fine job.

12. Nancy Grace isn't going to like this.
I think she was basing her next 6 shows on this. She hates molesters - even the ones who have only been accused. She works the public up into a lynching frenzy. She doesnt care how much damage she causes innocent people. Her ratings are more important.

I wonder how many of them will tell the update this week?

I saw this on Tucker and Joe and Nancy and a couple other shows.

14. So irrational...
Sure, it's understandable to stand up for one's daughter, but violence shouldn't be the initial response to it. He could have at least called the teacher and demanded an apology before rushing to confront him in person.

15. That's not the proper response either...
You go to the police and file a complaint, then THEY do their job. Since, in this case, the girl lied, that's a false report, and I think she should be thrown in juvenile jail till she's 18 myself.

24. Abusive Father, Abusive Daughter
This is what got the girl into trouble:

Mathis, the teacher's assistant, had turned the girl in last week after seeing her pour soda from the second floor of a school stairwell onto another girl's head, Dearing said.

Sure, it could have been an innocent prank on a friend, but considering the false accusal, I'd guess it was more of a bullying scenario. Just a hunch.

and was offered free NASCAR tix for doing this? (PS-O'Lielly did not offer the free tix, however. Now the dad may need a get-out-of-jail-free card instead).

22. She should be in juvenile hall and the dad should be in jail
I live in absolute fear some male student will accuse me of that kind of thing and I will be totally screwed. To that end, I never allow myself to be alone with a student of either gender, never touch students unless they initiate (and even then I back off). It is sad, people like this girl make it so kids can't get any affection at school for fear of the teacher being accused of molestation. I would refuse to allow that child back into my classroom under any circumstances.
