Molly Ivins facing third round of cancer
Nigh hairless, not hopeless, Austin writer won't let disease keep her quiet.

Friday, January 27, 2006

Molly Ivins, battling breast cancer afresh, sounds as feisty as ever.

The South Austin resident continues writing her left-of-center column, raising money for the journal where she forged her tart take on politics and, of course, cheerfully gigging Republicans such as the well-coifed governor of Texas.

Ivins, 61, tongue-in-cheeked that Gov. Rick Perry's trip to Iraq this week will slow anti-American insurgents. "The mere sight of his hair will do a world of good," she said.

She chatted with two visitors to her home office in Travis Heights without donning her wig of reddish-blond locks; her pate was nearly bald.

The California native, who grew up in the tony River Oaks section of Houston, fielded her latest (and third) cancer diagnosis around Thanksgiving. Surely she could be excused for feeling sorry for herself or slowing down.

"Actually," she said, "I feel pretty good." Renewed chemotherapy appears to be helping.

I didn't know about this latest bout and it's heartbreaking to me. If anyone can keep kicking cancer's butt it's Molly. I know we're all concerned about the Alito filibuster, but lets take some time today to appreciate a wonderful woman. Send her some good healing love, and kick in some money to breast cancer research if you can. And by the way Molly looks fabulous as a bald woman. Picture on the story link.

DU loves you Molly!

2. I wish Molly the best
and I know there are several different cancer protocols, and one of 'em is sure to work to buy her some more good time.

However, I can speak from experience that severe illness doesn't slow a crank down, it just makes us crankier.

Molly will continue to tell us the truth for as long as she's around.

24. There are some new breast cancer treatments
and also more knowledge about which combinations and doses work best. Of course, there are also lots of clinical trials going on, too.

Sounds as though she's getting good medical care and more breast oncologists are becoming expert at managing long term disease.

Hang in there, Molly - your fellow Dem bc survivor sisters are praying for you.

I learned a lot from comparisons she made with current antiwar activism. :loveya:

6. I got to meet her once on one of her book tours.
She gave a lecture at the University of Iowa. It was great. She signed my book and one for my daughter. She's a lovely lady, and I respect her greatly. Hope she recovers from this. We need her voice to be with us for some time to come.

8. Here's a better idea
If you really want to make Molly smile today, give money to her beloved Texas Observer. Subscribe or donate at whatever level you can afford. The web page has a place for comments and you can say it's in honor of Molly Ivins. If you read the article you will note that she has actually been playing that card at fundraising events. She doesn't want any personal gifts, but give the gift that counts. Either that or contribute to cancer research in her name.

I'm already a subsciber to The Texas Observer, but I took the time this morning to donate for her.

As DU's semi-official Molly Ivins column poster, I am very saddened to hear this news, but if anyone is feisty enough to kick cancer's ass yet a third time, it is Molly.

18. I saw Molly this morning on CSPAN (join the DU F@H team)
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 12:01 PM by Mabus
I had not heard that she was battling cancer again but I figured as much when I saw her this morning. She's such a wonderful woman and a great writer. I'm so happy (but not surprised) that she's hasn't stopped fighting. We're with you Molly.

BTW, if you would like to help with cancer research please consider joining the DU folding team (48157). The current thread is here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x241611 It is like the SETI program. Right now participants are faciliting research by donating spare CPU cycles to simulate the folding of proteins. When protiens misfold there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes. If you'd like to learn more and possibly help people like Molly (and my friend who is dying of renal cancer) please consider joining the DU Folding@Home team. A side benefit to joining (besides helping much needed medical research) is beating the freeper team. They got a head start but we are catching up.

36. ***FIVE YEARS of Molly's wonderful columns are ARCHIVED HERE:
http://www.workingforchange.com/column_lst.cfm?AuthrId=8

K & R for our wonderful truth-telling Molly! As a fellow proud native daughter of Texas, I've admired her and rooted for her and relished her columns for YEARS. I wish her the very best. I think the idea of contributing to the Texas Observer in her name, suggested elsewhere in this thread, is a GREAT idea.

DU loves our Molly!!! :grouphug: :yourock: :patriot:

...and don't forget
As Sam Clemons wrote as Mark Twain: "Irreverence is the champion of liberty and its only sure defense." Molly has always understood that.
