The Crook in Chief: wife would never run for Senate

Bush says his wife would never run for Senate

By JENNIFER LOVEN
Associated Press Writer
January 19, 2006

STERLING, Va. -- The Senate may be the place for some former first ladies, but President Bush on Thursday categorically ruled out a run for office by his wife, Laura Bush.

"She's not interested in running for office. She's interested in literacy," Bush said during an appearance at RK Moving & Storage here.

The topic came up as the president took questions from his audience after a speech on the economy. A woman asked if Mrs. Bush would ever run for Senate from the first couple's home state of Texas, and Bush responded "never"--twice.

He also declined the woman's plea that she at least ask Mrs. Bush if she might be willing.

"She's a great lady," the president said. "She's not interested in running for office."

Where do I start?

Rhetorical questions: Is the writer working with limited material? Did CIC repeat himself?

Literacy begins at home.

Bush trying to shift the focus from his and the Republicans' scandals to literacy.

2. Subtle jab at Hillary?
...or subtle sexism? Both? Or am I reading too much into this? Note the juxtaposition of the two statements:

"She's a great lady," the president said. "She's not interested in running for office."

The implication seems to be that great ladies don't run for office.

4. Also the other line:
"She's not interested in running for office. She's interested in literacy."

It figures that Bush would think the two are mutually exclusive!

5. Or both.
Not the sharpest tool CIC---often speaks without thinking, and this took two days to formulate.

3. She has dealt with literacy problems all her married life
I guess she considers her little W to be a life long attempt to prove you can teach a monkey anything.

I apologize to all monkeys out there who might be offended by being associated with bu$h.

6. The little woman's not interested in running
Did he actually ask her?

Or is this one of those "head of the household" decisions?
