Unfortunately the Constitution (26th Amendment) says otherwise..
The order of succession is specified there and for Pelosi to become President:
1) We'd have to control the House of Representatives. 2) We'd have to control the Senate. 3) We'd have to be able to impeach both Bush and Cheney simultaneously (which is why we'd need good control of both House and Senate.) 4) We'd actully have to DO it.
The reason for impeaching Bush (or at least the easy reason) would be the wiretaps. They are plainly a felony, he confessed to them on national TV, basically doesn't give a damn that we object, and is going to keep doing them. All the other illegal stuff he's done will be harder to prove, so I say get him out on the wire taps and he'll be a lot easier to investigate on all the other stuff when he's sitting in jail.
If it can be proven to within a reasonable doubt in a court of law that Bush stole the 2004 election, I don't think there's any way Kerry can be "retroactively" made President given that the Electoral college actually elects the Prez and regardless of the voting outcome in the popular vote or state by state breakdown, they unfortunately voted for the Bushweasel. It would be basically uncharted territory however (there are a few related cases such as Bush v. Gore and two instances in the 19th century)
Here is the only practical way I can see for Kerry to become President: It is theoretically possible for Pelosi to accept the Presidency, make John Kerry her Vice President and then she resigns from office making him the President. It would be incredibly self sacrificing on her part if she did this and I think the temptation would be too great to be President for her to be willing to do that.
I was trying to think if there was any other scenario like Kerry resigns from the Senate, gets appointed to the House (but here's the problem - Massachusetts has a Republican governor.) and then gets voted Speaker and then becomes President after the impeachment, but that seems a lot more complicated that Pelosi makes Kerry Veep and then resigns.
So much for hypotheticals, now let's go win the 2006 election!
