Kerry the Dem to balance power
Interesting letter to the editor in the Sarasota Herald Tribune:

As a registered Republican who relies on investment income to balance a household budget, I want to thank the voters in the recent Democratic contests for apparently giving the country a credible alternative to President Bush in November.

I intend to support Sen. John Kerry, but not for the obvious reasons of disagreeing with Bush's economic policy (irresponsible and shortsighted), foreign policy (unique blend of arrogance and ineptness) and domestic policy (cynical pandering to farm subsidies, steel tariffs, immigration proposals, trips to Mars and even many features of the Medicare drug bill).

Rather, I will support Kerry because I have come to appreciate the benefit of split government, where the presidency and Congress are in the hands of different parties. The 20 years from 1980 to 2000 teamed Reagan/Bush 41 with a Democratic Congress, and Clinton with a Republican Congress. The result was that the only actions taken were those that could command general agreement. Stability and prosperity were the order of the day.

I know times have changed and we face unprecedented challenges. Even more reason for the combined wisdom of our political leaders and split government.

James Loudon

1. Split government! Now that's a cause for voters to rally around!
I expect four more years of Barney cams!

2. I don't care why Republicans vote against Bush, as long as they do.

3. I am sure that many antiwar voters will flock enthusiastically
to a Kerry/Gephardt ticket.
