4. keep it alive, send to everyone, inc. o'really

maybe a "get outraged at this" avalanche would be useful to all the snoozedia.

remember what Christiane Amanpour said recently:" keep writing letters"
fwiw, i have taken to write very polite letters on the off chance it will actually be read.

(please don't :puke: this is one of those honey vs. vinegar things)

dear mr. o'reilly,
though i appreciate your intense feelings about Christmas and what a strong memory the holiday holds for you, i humbly submit that you would better serve the American people by directing your outrage to this story:
<<The U.S. government warned Saudi Arabia more than three years before the Sept. 11 attacks that Osama bin Laden might use civilian airplanes in terror attacks, according to a memo released Friday by the National Security Archive, NBC News reported.

The June 1998 note says bin Laden might take the course of least resistance and turn to a civilian target.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10398375/from/RS.4 />>

be a hero, sir. don't let this get swept under the carpet by the wussy media!
you can do it!

merry christmas,

john doe

12. The Failure to Defend the Skies on 9/11 -By Paul Thompson
No Warnings at All?

In his May 2003 testimony, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta stated to the Independent Commission, I don't think we ever thought of an aircraft being used as a missile. We had no information of that nature at all. FAA Administrator Jane Garvey said, I was not aware of any information about (planes) being used as weapons that was credible. Mineta and Garvey were merely repeating the same claims many Bush administration officials have made since 9/11. For instance, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice stated in May 2002, All this reporting about hijacking was about traditional hijacking. Even President Bush stated, Never did anybody's thought process about how to protect America did we ever think that the evil-doers would fly not one, but four commercial aircraft into precious US targetsnever.

Attacks Using Planes as Weapons...

In 1999, the National Intelligence Council, which advise the President and US intelligence agencies on emerging threats, said in a special report on terrorism:

Al-Qaeda's expected retaliation for the US cruise missile attack ...could take several forms of terrorist attack in the nation's capitol. Suicide bombers belonging to al-Qaeda's Martyrdom Battalion could crash-land an aircraft packed with high explosives...into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), or the White House.

It was public knowledge as early as 1995 that al Qaeda terrorists were planning to fly airplanes into buildings.

Terrorism trial begins in New York
3 men accused of plotting to bomb U.S. planes

May 13, 1996
Web posted at: 11:35 a.m. EDT

From Correspondent Brian Jenkins

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Jury selection began in New York Monday in the federal trial of three men accused of plotting to bomb 11 planes headed for the United States on a single day in 1995.

Ramzi Yousef is charged with masterminding the plot. He also will be tried later this year, accused of planning the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993. Four men are already serving life in prison for that crime.

The alleged plot was discovered in the Philippines in January 1995, when a fire broke out in a Manila apartment 200 yards from the Vatican's embassy, a week before the arrival of Pope John Paul II.

Police were shocked by what they found inside: a smoking mixture of explosives in a sink, street maps and garments like those worn by the Pope's entourage, suggesting a plot to kill the Pontiff.

They also say they found computer disks containing detailed plans to blow up U.S. airliners.

http://www.cnn.com/US/9605/12/terror.plot/

Phase II, CIA plane crash plot

Abdul Hakim Murad confessed details of Phase II in his torture and interrogation with Manila police after his capture. (for more information, see Section:Murad's Confession)

Phase two would have involved Abdul Hakim Murad either renting, buying, or hijacking a small airplane, preferably a Cessna. The airplane would be filled with explosives. He would then crash it into the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Murad had been trained as a pilot in North Carolina, and was slated to be a suicide pilot. Murad probably created this version of the plan.

There were alternate plans to hijack a 12th commercial airliner and use that instead of the small aircraft, probably due to the Manila cell's growing frustration with explosives. Testing explosives in a house or apartment is dangerous, and it can easily give away a militant plot. Khalid Sheik Mohammed probably made the alternate plan.

A report from the Philippines to the United States on January 20, 1995 stated, "What the subject has in his mind is that he will board any American commercial aircraft pretending to be an ordinary passenger. Then he will hijack said aircraft, control its cockpit and dive it at the CIA headquarters."

Another plot the men were cooking up would have involved hijacking of more airplanes. The Sears Tower (Chicago, Illinois), The Pentagon (Arlington, Virginia, the Washington Capitol (Washington, DC), the White House (Washington, DC), the Transamerica Tower (San Francisco, California), and the World Trade Center (New York, New York) would be the likely targets.

In his confession with Filipino investigators, Abdul Hakim Murad said that the Manila cell could not recruit enough people to implement other hijackings prior to the foiling of Operation Bojinka.

Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 03:36 AM by Wordie
It was based on a public (emphasis mine) threat from bin Laden against “military passenger aircraft.” The memo, however, said that bin Laden did “not differentiate between those dressed in military uniforms and civilians,” NBC News’ Robert Windrem reported.

Was this a case of hiding in plain sight, security wise? If ObL was making public comments such as this, how on earth were we not at all prepared?

21. Well it was *never* a secret anyway.
The possibility of getting suicide pilots to crash planes into buildings was being openly discussed in the news after the first bombing of the WTC. I know there was particular concern around New Year's Day 2000, and reports that "several" plots had been foiled. This was also discussed in the context of the Phillipines airliner bombing. No one at the time thought "Jeez, we'd better be writing all this down, someone may claim someday there was no warning". But when I first heard **'s minions saying "we had no way of knowing" I was just astounded -- were they not paying attention? Later, when it was (even more) obvious they were just lying, I was astounded again -- did they think no one else remembered?

30. That would be an immediate backfire on CONs.
That the Clinton admin told Saudis about civilian airliners to be used for attacks, would say Clinton was well informed. What then happened to the CON admin? Were they stupid, ignorant, incompetent, or treasonous?

There was a contention that the Clinton admin did not inform the incoming Bush admin. Now debunked. Clinton people DID inform them. So, this perspective won't harm Clinton.

A few months prior to 9/11/01 Bush stayed on an aircraft carrier during a conference in Italy. Didn't stay on land because there were warnings of planes being used to fly into buildings where our precious president might stay.

My question is how could Condi say that she forgot about that kind of a threat until it was too late, until after 9/11 that year -- when she knew about it just a few months earlier?

The article raises another question. How could anyone hire someone so ignorant as to be have been unaware of that knowledge in our history to have become a National Security Adviser to the United States of America?

I long for the moment when some CON tries to confront me with this one.

These 'coincidences' along with the process of elimination (dear Watson) can only lead us back to the Operation Northwoods scenario, and the same kind of LIHOP conservatives have been hammering FDR with for years (note Robert Stinnett's book Day of Deceit re FDR and Pearl Harbor foreknowledge).

PNAC got what it wanted, a 'new Pearl Harbor'. What's that old saying, be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

76. 9/11 War Games on 9/11- what a co-inkidink...
...Remarkably, on the morning of 9/11 itself, Fulton and his team at the CIA were running a pre-planned simulation to explore the emergency response issues that would be created if a plane were to strike a building. Little did they know that the scenario would come true in a dramatic way that day. Fulton's team was part of the National Reconnaissance Office, which operates many of the nation's spy satellites. It draws its personnel from the military and the CIA. The simulation was to start at 9:00 a.m., four miles from where one of the real hijacked planes had just taken off. Apparently it was cancelled when real events took over. Also on 9/11, NORAD was in the middle of another periodic war game, this one called Vigilant Guardian. Details are vague, except that the scenario tested an imaginary crisis to North American Air Defense outposts nationwide , and according to one NORAD employee, everybody at NORAD initially thought the real hijackings were part of the exercise.

presidential election; 9/11 is not a strength of Bush, it a colossal demonstration of his utter incompetence and how he turned that around to 51% of the voters is the most depressing commentary on the ability of Americans to think.

47. So Clinton and the Republican Congress failed to protect our planes?
Three years? We had three years to reinforce those cockpit doors and didn't bother?

I don't know why they dumped it on Friday. It's practically a get out of jail free card.

Our government failed us utterly. Neither Democrats nor Republicans should feel anything but shame. So busy with blue dresses they failed to do what we hired them for: keep us safe.

56. Uh...THREE YEARS before 9/11?
Bill was good on many many issues. But he was also being deliberately distracted and harassed so he couldn't pay all necessary attention.

What was done under Clinton to make sure that commercial aircraft could not be seized by terrorists? Clinton/Gore were aware of bin Ladin and worried about him. But what did they do to render bin Ladin's fantasies of seizing commercial aircraft impossible or too much trouble to contemplate? What did they try to do?

I understand that the Republican Congress would have blocked every move. They did block every move.

But the fact is, the Clinton administration had this information and the planes were left unprotected. If I were a Republican I would have such fun with this.

But it's not fun. I keep remembering that Ashcroft stopped flying commercial in July 2001 and I flew cross-country non-stop in August 2001. And didn't know I was a sitting duck.

What was done under Clinton to hinder access to our aircraft?

The Republicans are now in a position to argue that if Clinton didn't make it a top priority, why should they have felt it was urgent.

49. When I saw that second plane hit the WTC I knew in my heart of hearts
that BushCo was involved.
The first thought that came to mind was, "Bush did this!"
I still believe it, and will always believe it.
I will also always believe that if President Gore had been allowed to take his rightful place in the White House, the WTC would still be standing, and all those dead and wounded Americans and Iraqis would be living their normal lives today.

62. Aaahhh? Why is this NEW? This info has been out for a LONG time!
Isn't this the same info that was in Fahrenheit 9/11?

And I think FRONTLINE (and NOVA to) did a few shows with this info in them, not to mention the Bob Woodward book, as it says in the article. And I think this was in Richard Clark's book too.

I don't know, maybe I read too meany "Conspiracy Theory" web sites, were I read all this, but other that physically having a copy of George Tenet's letter, I don't see anything new here.

PLUS: this is sort of a dupe, if you go to the DU Home page, this is right above a NYT article that says the same thing.

66. 30 FAA Air Marshals on 9-11....today, CNN says 'thousands'
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 07:15 PM by EVDebs
And neither Reagan, GHWBush, Clinton, or GWBush made any effort to hire more than that 30 ? Mein Gott !!!

Plus GWBush gets an August 6, 2001 Presidents Daily Brief specifically saying commercial airliners to be used and what doe he DO ? Absolutely NUTHIN ! Even Clinton if you shoved it into his face would have at least hired, say, 100 more FAA Air Marshals, even if he had to get them on H1B visas from India !

The peak in hiring was in 1987, then downward from there...

""In response to this situation and the upsurge in terrorism in the Middle East, President Ronald Reagan directed the Secretary of Transportation, in cooperation with the Secretary of State and the Attorney General, to immediately explore an expansion of the FAAs armed air marshal program aboard international flights for U.S. air carriers. On August 8, 1985, Congress enacted Public Law 99-83, the International Security and Development Cooperation Act, establishing the explicit statutory basis for the air marshal program. Staffing levels of the air marshal program rose until they peaked in 1987 at approximately 400, thereafter declining until there were 33 active air marshals on September 11, 2001.""

http://www.ice.gov/graphics/fams/history.htm

Who was in office during the years 1987 through 2001 ? And who wanted neocon's PNAC Plan for a New Pearl Harbor ... those entrenched 'holdovers' in Clinton's administration biding their time for another Bush...

72. Read Richard Clarke
Richard A. Clarke wrote the fine fine book "Against All Enemies" which is a great read. I wholeheartedly recommend it, because it is so well written. In it, he tells us the story of US counterterrorism from his point of view as the director since Bush I or Reagan (I don't recall), and it is an easily read and understood history. Then he gets to GWB, and it is still an easy read, but I was so disgusted I felt like banging my head against a wall about 3 times per page. Clarke pretty much outlines just how much warning GWB had or should have had, that Clinton told GWB only one thing during the transition, knowing full well that GWB wasn't going to listen to much at all, and that was that GWB really had to go after this Bin Laden character and his Al Queda gang. And, of course, GWB said, something like, "Yeah, whatever. See ya." And so on.

I also recommend his new book, The Scorpion's Gate. Purely as a novel, it is a great read. Clarke points out that it's "fiction." And he also points out that one can often tell more truth in fiction than in non-fiction. Interestingly, the hypothetical president in that book barely shows up, but the Sec Def (who seem familiar somehow) looks very very bad. And as Clarke said on the Daily Show not too long ago, that of course, this was purely fiction, and couldn't happen, and was in no way related to any nations or people currently or in the past, and the sarcasm was visible on the screen. You can get that clip from the Comedy Central website, the daily show page.

This is not to minimize this little item from MSNBC.

Excuse me, please, while I run screaming from the room.

73. 911 pre Sept 2001 warnings.
Hey people, WOW, couldn't get over all the responces to this article, and going by the content, many of the responders claim they've been in the dark about this issue, and others similar.

Well, excuse me folks, but that excuse does not wash with me at all.
A 12 year old with his PC could find so much stuff on PRE 911 warnings it'd make your head spin, it's been there for ages, folks will simply not SEE what they do not wish to see.

For cryin out loud, your military even had an excercise wherein the towers were gonna get hit, and this I believe in the late 70's, if you're really serious in obtaining some information on this subject, try this;
http://www.nerdcities.com/guardian/STF/stranger-than-fiction.htm
another good one right here ; http://tvnewslies.org/html/where_the_hell_is_your_9_11_pr.html
Read em and weep.
Despite all this evidance slowly dribbling out, I still find 52% of Americans no longer support their homicidal maniac in the White House.
That means 48% of Americans STILL BELIEVE ALL OF HIS BULLSHIT AND RHETORIC, despite the PROOF he's a LIAR.
What does that tell us, about the citizenry of the U.S. of A. ?

The above one is very valid, we hear a lot these days about Self Government in Iraq and that supposedly this alledged elected Govt runs Iraq, well here is the evidance, the same Govt wants U.S. troops OUT, like yesterday, now stand back and watch, how the U.S. respects this democratically elected Government's wishes, and bugs out, don't hold your breathe though.

85. Yeah, I saw that on C-Span
I was watching a speach by Bill Moyers at about 9:30 or 10 o'clock and that flashed by in a blurb at the bottom. That was all I saw read or heard about it all weekend.

Bill Moyars speach was awesome and was all about how the media was laying down and cozying up to the administration.

Kind of ironic.
