It Is Not Acceptable To Be A Republican Anymore
It is Not Acceptable to be a Republican Anymore

By Cenk Uygur

I am growing more and more disgusted by anyone who remains a Republican anymore. We find out today that many of the false intelligence claims the administration made to get us into Iraq came from a man we tortured. It turns Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, one of the top al-Qaeda lieutenants we captured, made up stories about an al-Qaeda link to Iraq just so that we would stop torturing him.

(snip)

How many stories do you have to see about this before you get it through your thick head that they purposely picked the worst intelligence to make their case because they were going to war no matter what? The CIA told the administration just ten days after September 11th that there was no connection between al-Qaeda and Iraq. A Presidential Daily Briefing on September 21, 2001 explained at length that Saddam not only did not work with al-Qaeda but considered them a threat. And Dick Cheney goes around to this day insinuating a link.

How bad do these people have to be before your conscience kicks in? I hit that threshold about three years ago when I ran screaming from the Republican Party. I am beginning to believe anyone who remains after hearing this type of evidence against the administration is simply not a good person.

That seems like an over-the-top statement, but it really isn't. In fact, there is almost no other explanation. Who supports the use of torture? Who supports the unwarranted invasion of other countries based on intelligence we knew was made up? And who thinks we should use torture to get that bad intelligence so we can start that senseless war? Bad people.

3. Wow - I would love to send this to
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 02:34 PM by Mad_Dem_X
a younger co-worker of mine. She's in her mid-tweties, and a hard-line repuke (I think she gets all her opinions from her repuke dad). I would email this to her, but I have to work with her everyday so I want to try to keep it peaceful around here. :)

5. I'd post it at a wingnut site
(I still have posting privileges on two wingnut forums--from the days before I, like Cenk Uygur, ran "screaming from the republican party", of which I was at least not a member, but whose candidates I used to vote for)

but I never post at those sites, since the 2004 election was stolen--arguing with nutballs like those described in Uygur's article is just not worth the effort. May they all continue their journey to hell in a handbasket, uninterrupted by me--the sooner, the better.

6. I listen to Cenk every night on Sirius...
on the Young Turks with Ben Mankowitz and Jill Pike. They're great!

BTW, when he pronounces his name it sounds like Jenk (as in hi-jink{s}) You-gar.

7. It's a very broad statement to make - and I think a dangerous one
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 03:18 PM by AZBlue
I know Republicans who don't support this administration at all. Because this administration is so far from what "Republican" used to mean - and still does mean to many people. I don't support this administration and their horrible games but I'm still an American and will fight to get my country back. Many good people who are Republicans would say the same thing, substituting the words "Republican" and "party" for "American" and "country."

8. Bunk! Those people have already been branded "liberals"
by their own party. If you don't believe me, just take the persona you described, and post on a website like libertypost.org or freerepublic.com. (I am NOT accusing you of being a freeper or a "mole"; I am pointing out that the current and future republican party has only scorn for those you call true conservatives.)

Which brings me to the fact that it is unacceptable to be a "liberal" anymore. That's right--the word has been demonized for so many years, anywhere but in a place like DU, people can't say they are liberal w/o getting scorn heaped on them.

You can say what you want about "true conservatives" who are disapproving of the republican party, but until those people actually openly reject the republican party, and until they stop voting for that party, they are part of the problem. Pat Buchanan is a case in point. John McCain is another.

I renounced all things republican 3 years ago, after having voted almost exclusively republican before that. I maintain that it is not only the Bush/Cheney wing of their party that deserves to be destroyed, but also the enablers. Why? Because the enablers are the ones who gave Bush/Cheney enough numbers to gain power over us all. For that, the republican party, "well-intentioned" members and all, deserves to be RAZED TO THE GROUND, AND THE GROUND SALTED BENEATH IT.

Or, as Jonah Goldberg would say, "Carthage delenda est."
