John Kerry, Jack Reed to Hold Press Conference on Iraq Tomorrow
John Kerry, Jack Reed to Hold Press Conference on Iraq Tomorrow
November 29th, 2005

George W. Bush is scheduled to give another speech on Iraq tomorrow (at 9:45 a.m., est), before a captive audience. As I noted below, Bush has already made it clear today, that “We’re not going to cut and run.” So, it appears we can expect another staged photo-op of Bush posturing with the troops in attempts to try to shore up the flailing support for the war in Iraq.

Senators John Kerry and Jack Reed will also be holding a press conference on Iraq tomorrow - Wednesday, November 30.

Earlier this month, Kerry introduced his Strategy for Success in Iraq Act (S. 1993) - a comprehensive new strategy to complete the mission in Iraq and redeploy the vast majority of American combat troops as specific benchmarks to transfer responsibility to Iraqis are met, beginning with the draw down of 20,000 U.S. troops after successful Iraqi elections in December.

The goal of Kerry’s plan is to undermine the insurgency by simultaneously pursing a political settlement and the military draw down of American forces linked to specific, responsible benchmarks. If followed, the process will be completed in 12-15 months.

Tomorrow’s Kerry/Reed press conference will be held in the Mansfield Room at the U.S. Capitol, S-207, between 11:00 - 11:30 a.m. est. C-Span schedule notes that they will be broadcasting the press conference live, after Bush’s speech. This should be very interesting…

Media's been a little better postKatrina and postFitzgerald, but not much better.

24. Since he is on right after Bush and the media may be looking for
Dem comment, he may get some extra time. If he doesn't, I am writig to some of the media outlets and letting them know I want to see more Dem responses. I've got my fingers cross even though this is turning out to be "Bush week".

11. Right, and to be technical about it, they just "run."
They were nowhere near the mix to have anything to "cut."

13. Kerry on Bush cutting and running
"Now after all these mistakes, the Administration accuses anyone who proposes a better course of wanting to cut and run. But we are in trouble today precisely because of a policy of cut and run. This administration made the wrong choice to cut and run from sound intelligence and good diplomacy; to cut and run from the best military advice; to cut and run from sensible war time planning; to cut and run from their responsibility to properly arm and protect our troops; to cut and run from history’s lessons about the Middle East; to cut and run from common sense.

And still today they cut and run from the truth."

But he's a professional stateman. None on the other side of the aisle can hold a candle to him, or Reed.

9. Not sure what the connection is -
I'm assuming Reed might be co-sponsoring Kerry's Iraq Act.

10. Reed is a West Point grad and vet. Here is a little of his biography.
"Reed was born in 1949 in Providence, Rhode Island and grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island. After graduating from LaSalle Academy in Providence, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971. Following his graduation from West Point and receiving an active duty commission in the United States Army, Reed attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University where he received a Masters of Public Policy. Reed, an Army Ranger and a paratrooper, served in the 82nd Airborne Division as an Infantry Platoon leader, a Company Commander and a Battalion Staff Officer. He returned to West Point in 1978 as an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences.

Reed resigned from the Army as a Captain in 1979 and enrolled in Harvard Law School."

16. He's a very good guy
And his speeches on the Senate floor have been outstanding. He is another great Dem with a military background who is calling the Chickenhawks on their policies and asking them for accountability.

(Also, Sen. Reed re-introduced the LIHEAP Amendment on getting more money to assist the poor in paying their heating/cooling bills this fall. He was one of the chief sponsors the last time the Dems tried to get this passed.) A good Dem. Rhode Island should be very proud of this guy!

8. They're doing it! Making liars out the Repukes and media whores
who say the Dems never offer any plans themselves. There are at least three plans by Dems on the talbe (Murtha, Biden, and Kerry).
All this aside from the fact that it is NOT the Dems RESPONSIBILITY to devise a plan for conducting a war that Bush and the Repukes wanted and started.

In reality, they don't have to make liars out of the Repukes. Repukes & media whores show their true colors so glaringly.

One has to be a complete idiot not to see through their lies.

and makes it sound like they are all coming out with them because they are running for president.

There is something seriously wrong when a country believes Swift-Boaters, Faux News-crap over these statesmen!

Hope to catch this on C-SPAN re-run. Thanks all for the heads-up.

the Swift-Boat liars. All from the comfort of my home utilizing google. Gives me no great comfort knowing I could think to check facts and decide for myself.

Why others don't is past my realm of thinking. But the neo-cons must have studied them for a long, long time to reel them in.

Make SURE the media expects not just a vacuous speech from *, but an actual substantive PLAN from the Dems. Play offensively, not defensely.

Good Job - Kerry & Reed!

33. Pre press conference quip from Jack Reed today
Just found this little ditty from Senator Reed buried in an MSNBC piece:

"Democratic Sen. Jack Reed, a member of the Armed Services Committee and a former Army Ranger who visited Iraq last month, said the president must give “an honest assessment” pointing out not only the successes in Iraq, but the remaining pitfalls.

“We have to go forward with a plan, not just slogans,” he said.

Yes, I do believe JK and Reed are up to something...
