4. I met him once, 35 years ago

I was in a youth maching band in Los Angeles. We were in a parade in Inglewood (which is a city adjacent to LAX). The band was merely
adequate, but on this day, we seemed to be be getting lots of cheers and applause. It wasn't until we got to the end of the parade that
we discovered that Grand Marshal Muhammad Ali was in the convertible
behind us!

Once we were done with the parade, we all went over to shake his hand as well.

8. "Frazier is so ugly he should donate his face to the US Bureau of Wildlife
more Ali quotes:

"Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn't matter which color does the hating. It's just plain wrong."

"I am America. I am the part you won't recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me."

"I believe in the religion of Islam. I believe in Allah and peace."

"I know where I'm going and I know the truth, and I don't have to be what you want me to be. I'm free to be what I want."

"I wish people would love everybody else the way they love me. It would be a better world."

"I'll be floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee." (I'll never forget the first time he said that to Howard Cossell.)

"I'm so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and was in bed before the room was dark."

"People don't realize what they had till it's gone. Like President Kennedy - nobody like him. Like The Beatles, there will never be anything like them. Like my man, Elvis Presley - I was the Elvis of boxing."

9. It's a rotten disease. For them to announce this must mean that
he will not be making many more public appearances. My father had it...he eventually was bedridden, just couldn't swallow anymore....it just is a very hard situation...
