Calling all Brits: What's with the BBC lately?
Edited on Thu Nov-03-05 11:32 AM by zanne
Maybe it's because I watch BBC America, but I'm noticing alot more Blair spin and less comprehensive reporting from them than I used to. I switched from Cable TV to satellite TV so I could watch BBC, and now I'm not finding much difference between it and the American news corporations. Is it just me, or is something slimy happening?

1. I'm not a Brit but...
...I used to watch the BBC News at 7:00pm on one of my local UHF stations. I started getting a little wary during the Michael Jackson trial because the BBC News would cover the latest "development" every night. I thought the MJ trail would be something they'd touch on at the beginning, somewhere in the middle, and then at the end but they were carving out a portion of the broadcast every night for the trial.

Now for some reason it's been moved from 7:00 to 11:00pm.

2. I haven't noticed that at all....
The difference between the BBC and American "news" is staggering....for a start, if you watch the BBC you may well be surprised to find that stuff is happening IN OTHER COUNTRIES!!!

Yup, other countries ACTUALLY exist!! And important shit happens there too...!!!

BBC World News is the only place I "trust" to get un-baised news...the only news show that gets remotely close in the states is Countdown with Keith Olbermann...The rest is complete bullshit..

Although Bliar would say in public how proud he is of the BBC (as, on the whole, we all are), I'm sure that, in fact, he would much prefer to sell it all off to Uncle Rupert and replace it with some BritFox crap that does as it's told. The BBC never does.

4. Personally, I don't know because I haven't been watching the BBC
but remember they were brought to heel over Dr. Kelly. In a classic two-fer they were blamed for being right. Didn't the editor or director or whatever get replaced with someone more responsible?

5. Revenge for the David Kelly affair. Two top execs forced to resign
last year. They are working on Public Broadcasting and Knight Ridder here. Two years ago CNN got pressured by Israel for coverage there.

Excerpt:
The government has set up an independent judicial inquiry, led by Lord Hutton, into the circumstances surrounding Dr Kelly's death. Both Mr Blair and the BBC have said they will cooperate fully.

The BBC statement prompted Dr Kelly's local MP, Tory Robert Jackson, to call for the resignation of the BBC chairman Gavyn Davies.

Ex-Labour minister Glenda Jackson has called for Tony Blair to quit, saying the blame for Dr Kelly's death lay with Downing Street, which, she said, used a battle with the BBC to divert attention from the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan's report is at the centre of the row

Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith has called for Parliament to be recalled and for a broadening of the inquiry to investigate the government's handling of intelligence on Iraq.

7. CNN Israeli Protest
http://web.israelinsider.com/Articles/Politics/1164.htm
Excerpt
CNN Chief News Executive Eason Jordan said his news network had made "inexcusable mistakes," and had presented "incorrect perceptions" of the Middle East conflict, but denied that it was biased against either Israel or the Palestinians in its coverage. After CNN founder Ted Turner equated Israeli military actions with suicide bombers, the company dispatched Jordan to Israel as part of a damage-control mission.

"We're not perfect," Jordan admitted, speaking to Israel Insider staff. "There are things we can do better, and our intention is to be totally fair in our coverage."

An online petition posted on Israel Insider demanded that AOL-Time Warner Chairman Richard Parsons repudiate the remarks of Turner, his vice chairman, and that CNN implement policy changes to more clearly distinguish terrorists and their victims. The petition attracted over 2,000 signatories, each pledging to boycott CNN until corrective actions were taken, cancel AOL subscriptions, and/or sell AOL TW stock. More than 500 site visitors wrote in protest to CNN executives. Within 24 hours, Jordan contacted Israel Insider and requested a meeting.

Jordan arrived in Israel, reportedly his 50th visit to the country, along with Richard Davis, CNN's executive vice president for news standards and practices, following the media focus on Turner's comments, published last week in The Guardian. CNN disavowed connection to Turner's statements, saying that he no longer has any operational or editorial involvement with the channel. AOL-Time Warner issued a similar official statement, although no comment came directly from Parsons. END Excerpt

11. Yes it is a very good site for what is going on in the Media.
Of course even they pull their punches and have to be careful.

Feal the fear? It is pervassive and of course in its' own way useful to those who wish to rule. A fearful people can not be free and a free people can not be ruled by any but themselves.

The media - they don't deal in ink, they don't deal in truth. They hook us with entertainment but they ultimately deal in fear.
