Morning Sedition: We Hardly Knew Ye
It's not even off the air yet, but I already miss Marc Maron's Morning Sediton.

Fact is, Morning Sedition has always been the red-headed stepchild at Air America Radio. Maron and company have never received an iota of support from management. AAR has already put out two Al Franken "Best Of" comedy CDs, but Morning Sedition, the comedy engine of the network, hasn't even been allowed one. Fans have had to start their own online archive to get their fix and spread the word. (For what it's worth, I dare anyone to listen to some Lawton Smalls or Morning Remembrance bits and not laugh.)

Where I live, in Minnesota, the AAR affiliate has treated Maron as a disposable show, not because of ratings, but because they wanted to promote local talent and local issues. What a disaster that's been! In Morning Sedition's place has been a revolving door of hosts and scandals, with their accompanying ratings dive, I'm sure. As it is, my wife and I have actually taken to listening to the previous day's Morning Sedition via podcast during our commute, rather than listen to AAR's local morning host (Sorry, Wendy!) or even NPR.

It's not every show that inspires this kind of devotion.

I've never taken the effort to listen to a podcast daily. But Maron's warmth and humor, combined with Reilly's political insight, and the hilarious bits by Kent Jones and Jim Earl have my wife and I hooked. Maron knits it all together. What a depressing day it will be if they follow through and give him the axe, depressing not just because my wife and I will lose a program we love, but because it shows such a lack of understanding of how to grow the liberal base, and a lack of awareness of the talent they have. While the Daily Show is so hot it's popping out spinoffs, AAR takes the one show with the potential to be its radio equivalent and squashes it into oblivion. AAR didn't know what they were doing with Morning Sedition, and they still don't. More's the pity.

I can't help but think that if AAR management had recognized the jewel they have in Maron and Morning Sedition, they could've grown it into something huge. Why wasn't Maron cross-promoted on other AAR shows? Why no Best Of CDs? Why didn't AAR make carrying at least 2 hours of Morning Sedition an affiliate requirement? Why no national advertising for Morning Sedition? It's as if someone gave you the winning lottery ticket, and you used it to write down the phone number of your dry cleaner, then threw it away.

So here's to you, Marc Maron, and to the crew of Morning Sedition. Thanks for making all us geniuses, philosopher kings and queens, working-class heroes, progressive utopians with no sense of humor, and lurking conservatives laugh when the world often seemed unlaughable. Thanks for making liberalism fun again. Thanks for making me look forward to the day every morning. Thanks for giving my wife and I some great bonding time. Thanks for energizing me. Thanks for all the hilarious memories.

Whatever happens, wherever you go next, good luck to you. We'll be right behind ya.

4. I feel your pain in MN....
First they put on Nick Coleman (I enjoy his columns from time to time, but he is NOT radio host material) and now they have Wendy Wilde on. I'd rather listen to more national issues in the morning, especially with Morning Sedition's humorous takes. I thought the local AAR had learned its lession with Coleman ... sadly, that's not been the case....

49. That's cool..
.... and maybe I didn't give the show enough "time" to gel in my head.

But the few times I listened I just thought it was awful. Unfocused. Puerile. And this from a Howard Stern fan :)

I wonder what the ratings are like. Because IMHO, that is all that matters. If the show was getting ratings they should keep it, if not, buh-bye.

I hope everyone who enjoys Morning Sedition will make sure to get the word out and get others to sign the petition. ALSO, phone, email, and snail mail asap. I'd already done that, but will do so again.

You might also think about contacting the more influential among the current AAR hosts (e.g. Al Franken) and perhaps Randi Rhodes and ask that they convey to Danny Goldberg the amount of audience "upset" at the plans to dismantle Morning Sedition......

I am extremely distressed to learn that AirAmerica will cease broadcasting Morning Sedition in the near future. I have gone from an avid full-time listener to an on-line streamer, because I am in the Los Angeles broadcast area. We lost Morning Sedition once because the clear channel station, 1150AM, pulled the re-broadcast, 6-9, and inserted Stephamie Miller. Since I do not fit her demographic - 15-23
years, I found Morning Sedition being re-broadcast on a Sacramento station so again I am streaming. Then they went 'live', from 3-6, with Morning Sedition and put 'Steffie' in the 6-9 slot. I recently started going to the archives and listening to the 'podcast'.

What I am telling you is EVERY time I have been denied the pleasure of Morning Sedition's wit, humor and political insight, I have spent a couple of hours searching because it is, without a doubt, the smartest show on AirAmerica. Marc Maron and Mark Riley are the perfect radio host match-up. Maron is frantic; Riley is calm. Maron goes wandering at high speed; Riley brings him home and grounds him. I think of them as 'The Tortoise and the Hare'.

I listen to Morning Sedition and Mike Malloy regularly. And now I learn Morning Sedition is going the way of Lizz, Rachel & Chuck D. Just wondering.....Are you guys closet neo-cons? Teasing us into thinking we had a voice?

15. I'll miss them too
I love the show. They both do such a great job at balancing news and commentary with humor. I especially like it when Maron talks about living in Astoria, NY because I live there too.

He leveled with the audience this morning saying management did not want them on from day one and never gave them a chance. He went onto say that the decision was not his, he would love to continue doing what he is doing, but it's not up to him. And he wasn't whining about it, he handled it with class.

I'm going to miss them.

16. Plus, the absolute best issue framing in all of progressive radio.
When Maron and Riley are doing serious talk or when they are interviewing guests, they are the tops. The two of them trade off like a orchestrated tag team. They never skip a beat. It is something beautiful to behold. The information flows freely.

Marc's cynical sense of humor comes through in all his routines.

My favs:

Lawton Smalls (of course!)
Future Marc
Marc the Shark
Rapture Watch
The INews 5000
Cliff Notes
Pendejo -- Viva la revolution (now gone)

The stock routines are as good as the original Saturday Night Live. Marc and Mark adapt them to the issue du jour. As I said, the best issue framing in all of progressive radio.

I totally agree with you. Once you listen to Lawton Smalls, every religious fanatic right winger reminds you of him. You can't help but laugh when you hear them, and that's exactly how you grow the liberal base. You make the other guys laughable.

Same goes for "Marc the Shark". You hear him a number of times, and then you can't listen to Hannity without thinking of him.

I wish they had some archives of Future Marc. Every darn one of those was hilarious.

Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 02:03 PM by MarinCoUSA
I am sorry to hear that Maron is getting the axe- although I thought
he was a bit too self absorbed and didn't do enough research on relevant political issues. (check out Altercation.com for same).
But the older wise man/goofy kid chemistry worked and the rest of the crew brought on the funny. And any critique of MS pales in comparison to the sins of the Jerry Springer show. His heart is in the right place but what a waste of air time.

Miller and crew has me banging my head very day. Its very funny radio.

27. I love Stephanie Miller too but I think they should syndicate her to
replace Springer, not Morning Sedition. Morning Sedition is just great, they simply need to be promoted and allowed to grow their audience once they've gotten the proper promotion and advertising. They must keep Marc Maron, he is a perfect foil for Mark Reilly. They genuinely like each other and are a good match. Lawton Smalls is priceless.

If AAR is getting rid of Morning Sedition I contend they should try to pick up Nancy Skinner. Skinner is funny and informed. She has a great show that can attract a crowd to AAR. I have no problem with morning Sedition. Some of the interviews they have done have been very good. However, if the show does get cancelled I would like to have the Nancy Skinner show replace Morning Sedition.

19. Done! I emailed them all! I miss Marc SO MUCH in the mornings in L.A.
While Stephanie Miller is entertaining in Marc's old time-slot, there are SO MANY other AAR shows which are humorless and quite frankly flounder greatly...many which do NOT even seem progressive... such as Jerry Springer???, Ed Schultz????, Johnny Wendall (who I find screechingly whiney), etc.

Even shows like "Al Franken" and "Majority Report" have weakened since the absence of Kathryn Lampert, and Janeine G. (almost always gone now filming WEST WING). Why they choose to remove or marginalize Marc Maron to the middle of the night (at best) is troublesome indeed.

In fact, on the L.A. AAR channel, many times at night they "fill" time with sporting events???? What sports has to do with "progressive" radio is clueless to me. Why they can't use this valuable time to fill with Marc M. is baffling to me.

I totally support his return to PRIME-TIME A.A.R., and the removal of fake progressive shows such as Ed Schulz to other outlets.
Thank you very much!!

36. It sounds like you're getting local programming mixed in with AAR
It's my understanding AAR leases time on local stations, such as here in New York, and not all programming on that station is AAR-generated -- some programs, such as Sunday morning talk shows -- David Dinkins hosts one, there's also SharpTalk with Al Sharpton, is locally produced and not affiliated with AAR, but is affiliated with WLIB, which AAR broadcasts through in New York.

40. You must get a different L.A. AAR than me
because I don't get Springer on 1150. Wendell, thank god, only fills in when shows are on repeats (like Randi's many vacation/personal days), and even then I call up and complain to the station that I don't want to hear him on my radio and I'd prefer to listen to a rerun of a good show than an original bad show starring Wendell.

But I love Steph. When I first moved her, she was on KABC, then she got fired when they went all republicon all the time. She's hysterical and I literally laugh out loud at her stuff every morning. My neighbors must think I'm crazy.

Oh. And I woke up this morning with Maron kvetching about his contract not being renewed and talking about how inventive the show is. And then I fell back asleep, woke up again and he was still at it. I wish he used a headline translator for this: "Marc: They're Just Not that Into You!"

Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 01:40 PM by calmblueocean
The gist is that they aren't planning to renew Maron's contract, which means he'll be gone "by the end of the month", unless Danny Goldberg, CEO, changes his mind. They will then try to retool the show, possibly by bringing in Jim Hightower to work with Mark Riley, although that's just a rumor floating around at this point.

God, whatever happens to MS, I hope they can keep that guy around. I literally laugh until I cry when he does his schtick. It is just solidly funny.

64. Yes, I did; it was the Bread guitarist Jimmy Griffin, I believe
His obituary for John DeLorean was equally pee-your-pants funny.

Whatever happens to Morning Sedition, Air America has GOT to hold on to Jim Earl. He approaches the liberal comic genius of Bill Hicks--and I do not say that lightly, since Bill Hicks is like a God to me.

51. Morning Sedition is one of the only shows I listen to on AAR
I've loved it from the beginning. It's a classic and one of a kind. I used to listen to some unfiltered but now I turn it off as soon as Springer comes on although I appreciate that he can reach some of middle America. The only other weekday show I listen to is Majority Report in the evening while I'm working in the kitchen (sometimes the end of Randi Rhodes). On the weekends sometimes I listen to Ring of Fire or Laura Flanders. If they off Maron then I won't listen to AAR at all in the morning. It'll be back to npr for me. That really really sucks. I love Maron's comedy - all of the characters - and he and Riley's relationship. It's a damn good radio show and AAR management has its head so far up it's own ass it can't see it.

I've been a big supporter of AAR since long before its inception. I've supported it during its bad times and have always considered myself lucky to have it around. But, frankly I think they're screwing themselves and they have lost my loyalty. They've become just another company to me.

57. Free Marc Maron!!! :-)
I love Marc Maron, and respect others who don't, comedy is hit or miss.

And I hate to say it but plenty of democrats are humorless prigs, or at least their online personas are. Those who are pushing for a humor-free morning show, ie. not "immature sophomoric" are just in that category, IMO.

Those of you who get upset about Maron's crudeness and compare him to some FM-radio's zoo-crew are totally off base and talking out your asses. He's a compassionate progressive comedian, totally narcisistic and self-absorbed but his heart is good, and he knows how to frame issues in a progressive way.

Jim Hightower is great, and a humorist. Those who think that his arrival at MS would give you your erudite humor-free experience you are jonesing for are not aware of Hightower's work.

I've yet to find anyone on this board who really endorses Jerry Springer, without reservations.

Oh well, If all goes as expected this show will stop being funny.
And the humorless prigs win!

I keep odd hours so I have to stay up all night to catch Morning Sedition. It's worth it.

It's not just the laughs, it's the facts that keep me tuned to MS. The clear, concise way they cover the news. The great interviews. The best live-on-stage shows of any AAR program. The lack of tinfoil, and the Dem-bashing, which have driven me to turn off several AAR shows - permanently.

But yes, the laughs are great. So many days the news just makes ya wanna cry. It's better to laugh so you can shrug off the pain and soldier on.

I e-mailed Goldberg last week and this week I'm sending snail mail. I'll be signing the petition next.

And after that, I'm switching back to streaming BBC radio, which has excellent news coverage, all kinds of music, and no commercials.

58. Part of the problem with "Morning Sedition"
They talk a lot about New York City issues and happenings. There are some of us who just don't care about NYC stuff. That's why I don't listen all the time. That and Maron tends to sound like a whiner. His comedy bits are usually pretty good, but get off the NYC beat and realize that it is a national network, not NYC's personal plaything.

59. Not the best use of a very valuable time slot
I am open-minded about it. A serious left morning show would have a much larger audience. I would like to see something more like the Pacifica Morning Show or a hard left, edgy and uncompromising version of Morning Edition.

I pop in and out of the show in the mornings. I admit that I enjoy it but this is not the best use of a very valuable time slot.

Morning Sedition has a bit of a Wayne's World feel to it. A serious news program might bring in more revenue and attract foundation support.

AAR really needs a Raw Story / Truth Out kind of kind of news program as a foundation to its editorial programming. The "Air America Radio News" segments are a baby step in the right direction.

Instead of making a show that is funny into Democracy Now?

I listen to both shows almost every day. Not everything has to be serious, in fact laughter is very helpful to my mood in these times.

76. Like most places Dallas only has AAR
We do not get Pacifica here. I believe that AAR has a greater reach than Pacifica. I would be very happy if they were to syndicate the program. Why re-invent the wheel?

Many places only have AAR. This is serious business. The standards need to be raised.

Do you really believe that this is the most effective use of the most important time slot on AAR?

80. Democracy Now
DN is syndicated, its on Direct TV, and its technically unafiiliated with Pacifica now. Amy Goodman took the show out of the Pacifica control a few years ago to ensure it didnt get swallowed up in the big flap over control of Pacifica Board a few years back.

I guess that I'm selfish in regard to viewing the most "effective use" as being a personal judgement. Not some imagined benefit for a political gain that could be achieved by having some staid boring unfunny show in that timeslot.

And yes I do beleive that its the most effective use. I can't stand when people who don't like Jerry Springer personally, but think that his show "brings in lots of those moderates" and is great for AAR. BS. He's a parasite, and his previous work invalidates him as some spokesperson for the left or progressivism in my book. Good thing I don't have any input on AAR's management.

Thanks for your beautiful words about this program. You put in writing what I feel about the program but was unable to articulate.

The efforts of those who support keeping Morning Sedition as it is with both hosts appears to be having an effect.

I want to encourage everyone to sign the petition or send an e-mail to Mr. Goldberg to save the program as it is.

Finally dear calmblueocean I would like to encourage you to send your text message to Mr. Goldberg if you haven't already done so.

It so brilliantly captures what this program is about and trying to do that, Mr. Goldberg and the staff of AAR must read it.

88. What Is WRONG With Goldberg Anyway???
I cannot find my name even though I submitted my name on the petition, maybe it will show up later? I will come back here and redo it if it does not go through. I wrote to Goldberg twice, once last week, when it weas hinted they were taking it off and then this week. What is WRONG with goldberg anyway? i thought he was supposed to be this great genius and all he seems to be doing is take thw funniest people off except Franken. I loved Lizz Winstead, gone as soon as he got onboard and it goes on. I like Hightower, but I LOVE my Marc and Mark!!!!!

Keep Writing People!!!! If they have to get rid of someone, maybe they should get rid of Goldberg instead, huh? Huh? Huh?
