I've never seen any of the Brazilian soaps, but our local Mexican restuarant plays "telenovelas" if you know the right time of day to be there. If business is slow, the staff will sit with you and watch along...

1. A bit about Glória Perez that may seem unrelated but it's not:

In 1992, her 21 year old daughter, an actress in a soap she wrote, was raped and murdered -- by another actor of the same soap. A reporter asked if she'd approve of the death penalty for the killer. Her answer was NO, the death penalty accomplishes nothing and she was against it.

She has earned my admiration and respect since then.
