Great Letter to the editor about Iraqi Democracy
I hope I can cut and paste this whole letter. It was sent to me by e-mail and I don't have a link to it. It was in the Las Cruces, New Mexico Sun News

Letters to the editor October 28, 2005
Iraqi democracy

The Bush administration is so happy about the Iraqi constitution and convinced it will be the lead-in to a democratic state. Well, let's review some of the salient features of this remarkable document before we break out the champagne.

First, the "age of consent" for a girl in Iraq is 9 years old. Lest you be confused as to what that means, a man can have intercourse with a 9-year-old girl quite legally under the new constitution in Iraq. The age of consent was 13 in most Arab nations, but recently too many men have been caught having sex with underage girls, so the fix was obvious -- reduce the age of consent!

The Iraqi constitution also prevents the government of Iraq from passing any laws which are in conflict with Sharia. In short, women will have to have three witnesses to counter the testimony of one man. The only acceptable reason a woman may divorce a man is if he fails to "perform his husbandly duties." He, of course, can divorce her anytime he chooses for any reason and send her home to her family in shame.

A man who performs an "honor killing" will get a slap on the wrist and be home again in approximately six months. For those who do not know, an honor killing is the murder of a woman who has been raped -- she is killed by her own relatives in order to remove the "shame" against the family honor. Since the US invaded Iraq, honor killings have been reported to have increased 300 percent or more.

There you have it -- this is the "democracy" our soldiers have been dying for.
