17. What a great idea, if you want to pay 5 bucks a gallon.
If you think the government can find, drill, produce, transport, refine, transport, and distribute gas cheaper than the private industry. I've got Mountain Villa just outside El Paso TX i want to sell ya.

24. Actually, considering its already one of our more subsidized industries...
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 11:43 AM by Solon
Yes the government would be more efficient at that.

25. Actually,
$5 bucks a gallon would get up within shooting distance of the difference between what we pay, and what we subsidize gas burners currently via other budgets.

If gas users paid, for example, the military cost of securing the oil supply as part of the price of gas, I suspect it would easily exceed a $2/gal surcharge.

42K drivers and passengers, cyclists and pedestrians killed on the road every year. What is the social and economic cost of that over time?

My point was not to do it cheaper. My point was to take the robber barons, and shake them inverted until some of what they have stolen from the American people goes back into actually moving America forward in an energy efficient way.

We need to break out of the suburban paradigm before it buries us.
The oil industry has no interest in conservation of oil. With a federally managed oil industry, the actual cost of oil could be borne by those who consume oil. That will spur both conservation and innovation. And we might get back to shouting distance of oil independence, if enough efficiency and demand destruction occurs.

My Sweetie drives 40 plus miles a day to school and back. And the only way to get there is by car on the freeway. That is twisted and wrong, and only a paradigm shift can fix it. The future is to the efficient, and rail wins hands down.

There is very little they can do to justify making 8 billion in three months when we are at War and gas is $3 a gallon

Great. They need to hear this. Unconscionable usury. Gas should cost 49 cents a gallon for the next five years or they should have the majority of their profits taken to fund education/ health/ your favorite issue for that long.
