What exactly does it mean to be a Judeo-Christian nation?

Saw a couple of seconds Bill O'Really. I had no idea what he was talking about except he pulled out the "We have a Judeo-Christian Heritage" Card.

What does that mean?

I wish we had a little more 'Judeo' in our national Heritage.

But, we don't.

Our nation doesn't say "It's Hanukkah, everybody take the week off."

And, the Anti-Semitic wing of the Far Right (about 98.9% of them) would be further cut off from the mainstream.

As far as I know, the 'Judeo' refers to the Old Testament of the Bible and not very much to Judaism or the Jewish people.

So when a person talks about having a Judeo-Christian Nation, I think we are looking at a person who supports the Dominionist cause.

Ultimately, giving fundies too much power is å very bad thing. If you have not read this book, its a good read.

4. Think about Europeans as the dominating culture in the US

for the last 200 years. Think about their religions...you should see it now. They are mostly Christians and Jews. Other religions were a very small cultural force in the US.

That is not to deny that Native people have their own religions, or that immigrants from other parts of the world had and have different religions.

5. They think adding "Judeo" makes them look less prejudiced.

They actually mean "Some Protestants." Don't want to anger the Catholics--who are allies on SOME issues. And there's suspicion about those Episcopalians, Lutherans & Methodists.

If they really wanted to include all religions that came from a same source, they would say: "Judeo-Christian-Muslim." Somehow, I doubt they will.

And that would leave out our increasing numbers of Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains, Parsees & Taoists. We've got members of all these faiths living here in Houston.

Not to mention the Atheists & Agnostics, who have been here since the beginning. And adherants to Native American practices, who were here before the beginning.
