ALERT: Unauthorized Reproduction bill (Indiana)

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/10/3/213554/300

We just got a heads up about an upcoming article in the Indianapolis magazine NUVO from the author of the as yet unpublished article.

A draft of the legislation which, among other things, bars unmarried people from having children by articifial means is here:

The Crime of "Unauthorized Reproduction"
New law will require marriage as a legal condition of motherhood

By Laura McPhee

Republican lawmakers are drafting new legislation that will make
marriage a requirement for motherhood in the state of Indiana,
including specific criminal penalties for unmarried women who do
become pregnant "by means other than sexual intercourse."

According to a draft of the recommended change in state law, every
woman in Indiana seeking to become a mother throu gh assisted
reproduction therapy such as in vitro fertilization, sperm donation,
and egg donation, must first file for a "petition for parentage" in
their local county probate court.

Only women who are married will be considered for the "gestational
certificate" that must be presented to any doctor who facilitates the
pregnancy. Further, the "gestational certificate" will only be given
to married couples that successfully complete the same screening
process currently required by law of adoptive parents.

why do the republicans in Indiana fear women?

are all republicans so anal and afraid of women that they feel they have to keep us under control?

well, I have one thing to say to these republicans - UP YOURS

PUKE on your "gestational certificate" you nazis

1. Don't you know that the GOP is widely known as the 'defenders of
person liberty"? Just ask the Freepers. They claim it's the Dems who are taking away civil rights!

2. "Unauthorized?"
Earth to Indiana - "unauthorized reproduction" is what Serbian troops did to Bosnian women 10-15 years ago.

I guess they though the term "unnatural" was too hardsell...

5. Your tax dollars at work
This creates yet another tax funded bureaucracy. Use the money for something else, please. Like fixing the roads or funding sports in schools.

6. Mike Malloy was talking about this last night.
He said there is a part of the bill which states that married
women applying for in vitro fertilization must present proof
of participation in "church related activities" to be considered
a candidate for the procedure.

He was practically screaming when he was reading it.

7. That law, if passed, will be struck down as unconstitutional
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 06:18 PM by StopThePendulum
As in an unconstutional invasion of privacy. It's also illegal discrimination against women, since it not only makes a criminal out of a woman who gets pregnant outside of marriage, it lets the guy who gets the lady preggers off scot-free.

You cannot legislate salvation, fundie imbeciles!

8. This could be the 'license to stop and question' any pregnant woman
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 06:28 PM by Ferret Mike
Authorities could use this law to question the legitimacy of any pregnancy and force the woman to prove a man inseminated her.

In this world where the police like those door opening situations, this is not a far fetched thing to worry about.

11. According to the NUVO reporter, there was a flood of calls and e-mails
and the senators and reps were overwhelm by the feedback, a lot of it from outside Indiana. The ICLU and Planned Parenthood, as well as PFLAG and Stop the Amendment (the local GLBT rights groups), went on the warpath.

Here is what Laura McPhee said in her e-mail:

WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!

This is how democracy is supposed to work kids! They step over the line
and we push them back. Make sure you give the biggest congratulations to
everyone on the listserv -- my sources tell me that our senators and reps
were flooded with thousands of phone calls and emails.

YES!!!

Laura :)
