1. This would be an important one here: commission vs committee

Senator Frist and Speaker Hastert have indicated that Congress will conduct a thorough investigation modeled after some of the most serious investigations that Congress has ever undertaken: the 1973 Watergate Committee, the 1987 Iran Contra Committee, the 1994 and 1995 Whitewater Committees and the 1997 Campaign Finance investigation.

Here's what they are trying to do: argue that an independent 9/11-style commission will not be needed because committees have a historical precedent. The difference is that it is harder to whitewash if you hire an independent commission.

Any Dem going on TV should bone up with a good response to this. Like pointing out how the Iran Contra comittee granted immunities, which allowed people who should have been jailed to walk free.

3. Screwtape Brigade
Guest posting by Stirling Newberry.

One of the key talking points for the right is how Katrina is a demonstration of the failure of big government "bureaucracy". That the people on top did their job, and that it was the little people of government who failed everyone. In some cases this was true, but there is no evidence for a systematic failure. But since when did a complete lack of evidence stop the right wing from going forward.

Consider Michael Isikoff and Hosenball getting on board with the meme that Katrina dumped 6" of red tape on New Orleans, and that the Republicans are working to bail it out. Even as they admit that Brown's job and resume were FEBAR, they then spin the investigation as the Democrats "boycotting".
