POLLS SHOW SUPPORT FOR BUSH ADMINISTRATION CRUMBLING...

Two new polls show President Bush's approval ratings at all-time lows. The AP-Ipsos poll gives the President a 39 percent job approval rating, while the Newsweek poll shows Bush's ratings even lower at 38 percent. Newsweek also finds for the first time since 9/11, a majority of Americans disapprove of how Bush is handling terrorism and homeland security.

The slow, disorganized federal response to hurricane Katrina has tarnished not only the President but also the nation's view of the Republican party. The AP-Ipsos poll finds that 65 percent think the country is on the wrong track. And according to Newsweek, only 38 percent of registered voters now say they would vote for a Republican if the Congressional elections were held today. 50 percent of registered voters say they would vote for a Democrat.

my favorite uncle was, about 15 years ago, the subject of a feature article in the New Yorker written by John McPhee. He was a Nevada State Brand Inspector of the old school, packed a pistol and caught cattle rustlers.
