Grim Prophesy...

A year or so ago, Senator John Kerry stood up before the world and said that He and Senator John Edwards had the "Right Values" to lead this Nation.
How right he was.
The chaos, casualties and needless loss of life that attends upon Hurricane Katrina are not the function of mere bureaucratic snafus or ill-preparedness or whatever today's excuse happens to be.
No..the current catastrophe is entirely the result of the wrong values being preached and acted upon at the very topmost echelon of this Republic. If you believe as George Bush does that the proper role of the Federal Government is to be a bodyguard to the Praetorian Class, war machine of choice and nothing else then the Katrina chaos is inevitable as night follows day.
A contempt for Federal activism and a fanatical wish to sever the public's occasional dependence on said action can be the only reason why FEMA and other agencies have been crammed full of crooks, laggards and hopeless ineptoids.
Forget the fact that the public has a constitutional right to expect such action, men must fit the praetorian ideology no matter what!
If your own personal ideology hold no brief for successful Federal action of any type, then get ready for ever more Katrinas...because this is the heartfelt belief of not only President Bush but VP Cheney and most of the men who aspire to the 2008 GOP Nomination for President.
Hell some of them will never admit it, but they are very much satisfied with the current outrage at FEMA etc...since by their debased beliefs this increases anger at the Federal Government and paves the way for the inevitable libertarian eschaton.
This is of couse, a value structure completely at odds with the majority of public opinion in the USA. Alas however the Praetorian Class and their clients in the GOP have never found this to be any barrier to gaining and holding power in the USA.

In short....this is only the beginning my friends.

1. Unfortunately,
this has the ring of unmistakeable truth.

Ineptitude of this magnitude can't be accidental, I'm afraid.

3. How right you and the author of this are!
I have said this repeatedly. We must find a way to put this right, and get our candidates elected. We cannot govern if we do not win, and we cannot change things until we govern. Period.

VALUES MATTER. Not corporate values. Not values based on hate. Human values... Democratic Values.

Thanks for posting this. We all need a wake-up call every so often to remind us why we are here.

6. excellent ... i agree completely ... however ...

this is an extremely important theme ... it looks beyond this issue or that issue to the underlying philosophy ... the right-wing ideology is anti-government and government when it works properly is there to serve the best interests of the American people ...

we are best when we are a society and not a collection of individuals out only for ourselves ...

having said that, and please note that i am in 100% agreement with the BP, the theme of being "pro-government" does NOT go far enough ... the post is wrong to see the enemy solely as a right-wing belief in smaller government ... let me repeat that point ... it is NOT enough to identify "the enemy" as those who believe in smaller government ...

the "REAL ENEMY" is NOT an ideology at all ... the "REAL ENEMY", who sits in the shadows and uses the "small government, anti-government mantra" as a "sham ideology" is raw corporate GREED ... if we don't understand the "REAL ENEMY", we will never succeed in defeating it ...

why would BIG BUSINESS want a smaller, less effective government?

because THEIR INTERESTS are NOT the best interests of the American people ... they don't want pollution controls ... they don't want product safety legislation ... they don't want worker safety laws and minimum wage laws ... they don't want class action lawsuits ... they don't want oversight and monitoring agencies ... they want "FREE" enterprise, i.e. they want to be FREE TO DO what is in the best interests of their largest stockholders and FREE NOT TO DO what is in the best interests of the American people ... they are nothing but greedy little piggies playing in the dirt ...

the "REAL ENEMY" has infested our government ... the BP is absolutely right to say that the "propaganda" they use is a laundry list of reasons that big government is ineffective and small government is better ... but this is merely the tool they use to weaken the only power, i.e. the US government, that would be able to restrain their "profits before people" actions ... the "tool" they are using is an enemy to be battled BUT the REAL ENEMY is the infestation of our government and the weakening of our democratic institutions by greedy corporatists ...
