"...Clark going down like the Hindenburg.." On FOX-TV
Gregg Jarrett says the above in discussing primary with Brit Hume. Brit Hume never called him on it or corrected him. He could have called the General a "deserter"... Fair and balanced, once again.
(OK, I'm going to get up and change the damn channel.. :) )

I decided not to say that.

17. Clark has A MAJOR PROBLEM
He doesn't know when to shut the heck up!

That alone makes him to volatile and too dangerous to be given the nomination.

Someone needs to teach this guy that he isn't in the military anymore and everything that he says is going to be analyzed and thrown back in his face and someone needs to teach him how to SHUT UP sometimes!

Spout, spout, spout, spout!!! That's all that his mouth constantly does!

The media is not bringing Clark down. His inability to SHUT UP before he puts his foot in his mouth is what is hurting him.

32. First of all, I flip through all of the news channels
Secondly, what did I say?

I said that Clark needs to learn when to SHUT UP and he does.

The post from the Clark supporter last night who was switching to Edwards essentially said the same thing.

Clark hates to be challenged on his opinion, and he doesn't know when to shut up.

"I WORKED MY WAY THROUGH COLLEGE." You don't work your way through West Point, DUH!!!

"I GREW UP POOR!" Why now, Wes?

"I HAVE NEVER TAKEN A DIME FROM WASHINGTON LOBBYISTS!!!" Uh, Clark, YOU WERE A FREAKING LOBBYIST!!!

Those are some things that he said this week, and most of the time, those statements just came out of no where! He is talking about foreign policy and how he is electable because he is a general and then he just shouts out, "I HAVE NEVER TAKEN A DIME FROM WASHINGTON LOBBYISTS" and people are looking at him like he is crazy.

The guy is crazy. Until he learns how to SHUT UP, and understand that he is going to be challenged on what he says, and learns when he should and should not say something, especially something that is not true or relevant to what he is saying, then he is going to continue to go down.

AND NO! I DIDN'T NEED FOR FOX NEWS TO TELL ME THAT which they didn't, duh! I have been saying it all freaking week.

Saying he's crazy is offensive. I don't say that about candidates I disagree with. That sounds like what an operative would say. A little too personal and not real substantive or issue oriented.

38. WHEN DID I SAY THAT I "DISAGREE WITH" Wesley Clark???
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 01:39 PM by tryanhas
He is actually the only other candidate that I would vote for besides Edwards!

I'm not voting if it is BONESMAND V. BONESMAN (Kerry v. Bush) or MOONIE V. MOONIE (Lieberman v. Bush), and neither Kucinich or Sharpton have a prayer.

I will only vote for Edwards or Clark, period!

Otherwise, I'm not voting for the same AGENDA of Kerry, Bush, and Lieberman...PERIOD!

As for Dean, if he wasn't a FISCAL CONSERVATIVE, who gutted the life out of social programs in Vermont and laughed at Democrats in the process, just to balance the budget. If he didn't have a history of screwing the poor in Vermont, and being Bush with a "D" in front of his name, then I might would vote for him, but if he is the nominee, I'm sitting it out as well. If I'm going to vote for someone to cut social programs, cut taxes on the wealthy, someone who feels like "most people who are arrested must be guilty and it's alright for the police to lie in some instances", then I might as well vote for Bush and his secret energy panel, just like Dean had.

I said Clark needs to learn when to and when not to speak! He needs to learn when to shut up, period! He is bringing himself down, not Fox News, which I hate, or any other media outlet.

If he says it, they are going to cover it, and it's HIS FAULT ALONE, because he shouldn't have said it.

Learn to think before you speak, Wes.

43. And he should have set them straight on that "deserter" comment .?
Right? He should n't have just let it lay out there and let people think that Bush was actually a "deserter"? And he just thought he was poor because his father died and his mother had to move back to Arkansas and live with his grandparents...They had a pretty nice house. They were nowhere near poverty, right?

46. Not a balanced viewpoint
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 02:06 PM by krkaufman

Every candidate is saying the same types of things. One-off, slight misstatements that are *not* part of some grand deception scheme; however, Clark's are getting much more negative play than *ANY* of the other candidates -- at the moment.

And, gee, combine that with documented plans by the right to subvert Clark's campaign by supporting his competitors. Yes, Clark could improve his political skills and stump-speaking, but there *is* a conspiracy to derail him.

49. Thank you for making my point
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 02:12 PM by krkaufman
Yes, exactly. That's my/our point.

Al Gore was attacked with massive amounts of distortions and outright falsehoods, at a rate and with a pervasiveness that was difficult to counter. Yes, some people learned the truth, but the corrections are never publicized as widely as the accusations -- and the accusations mutate into jokes and SNL skits that take on lives of their own. (Darrel Hammond was a frickin' hoot!)

From your post, I think we can agree, then, that it's the same type of pervasive attack taking place on Clark.

Gore was the presumptive Democratic nominee whom they knew they would be facing in the general election. And Clark is the current Democratic nominee whom they most fear in this November's general election.

The current attacks on Clark are of a different level than *any* criticism being leveled at the other Dem candidates -- and it's not because they're running perfect campaigns.

I don't, and I can guarantee you that most Americans don't either.

Besides, Clark's answer to that question was fine with me. Michael Moore said it, not Clark.

Who cares what Moore said? He's not running for President.

39. Were you there, Try? Did you hear what he said or did you hear
and read what the reporters said about what was said?

A guy like Clark is going to have to take the chance that his words will be misused and misrepresented OR he can learn to play his role in the media storyline, and become just as inauthentic and phony as any of the "professional politicians."

It is ironic that people want "outsiders" but get nervous when the guy they get isn't just like the other ones. Ironic and pathetic.

One of Clark's problems is the media itself, which is not really newspapers and television and radio reporters but an amorphous blob called the media which consists of a clutch of mindless, copy reading drones with nice hair, dancing to the music played by the people who sign their checks.

There once were newsmen and women on the air and in the newspapers but they are increasingly isolated and suppressed by the downward pressure of their employers. TV is especially bad as the cable companies strive to fill up their 24/7 schedules with commentators and pundits, mostly right wing mouthpieces sprinkled with occasional faux-liberals like Alan Colmes.

So what good would it do Clark to "shut up" and only say what is safe? He isn't going to get a fair hearing anymore than Pat Buchanan or Ross Perot did. He is the target of a media storyline and the only chance we have to will break the power of these liars in the Minsitry of Truth is by supporting him and getting his message out to the voters.

And by assuming that people who call the candidate crazy are most likely working for the other side.

Look around you and see just who it is that pushes that line. Decide if those are your buddies, and if so, would you be better off hanging with them?

41. I don't have to be there
There are things like PBS CAMPAIGN SNAPSHOTS that show about 2 minutes of a candidate speaking.

IF I AM WATCHING CLARK SPEAK ON TELEVISION, and he says what he said, then he said it.

Get over the media manipulation crap people.

Clark "SAID" everything that I just posted. He said it, and he needs to learn to think before he speaks. He is hurting himself.

He was anchoring on MSNBC with Chris Jansing on 9/11 and he fell to pieces during the broadcast, compared to Jansing, who stayed on the mike during the entire attack. The Hindenburg reference is ironic because Gregg sounded like Herbert Morrison (the "Oh, the humanity" announcer from the Hindenburg crash) the morning of 9/11...

40. This means trouble
If Clark cannot find a way of getting around the right wing media and talk straight to the voters, he is not our guy. You think things are bad now when the fighting is merely between Democrats? You think that Fox is going to ease up after we get a nominee and suddenly actually become fair and balance? Please.

Blame the media if you want, but I say if Clark cannot deal with the media now, what makes you think he'll do any better in the general?

44. It's not just the negative media
Clark has actually been doing pretty well redirecting the "gotcha" questions to positive messages.

The real problem is that the right-wing is trying to keep him from getting the Dem nomination by:

  • prop up the other candidates and discount/ignore Clark, as much as possible
  • negative/gotcha questioning only, when he does get a media opportunity

It's the lack of attention and relative candidate splooge for the Liebermans that's the bigger problem.

Once the GE phase begins, the media won't be able to ignore the Dem candidate. It'll just be a battle against the slander. For any of them.
