"We at the DLC didn't want Dean as chair, or Internet activists."
"We don't want the party being steered by a few keyboard warriors with little contact with the real world."

Many people are frustrated with the Democratic Party, and that's understandable. Some call for splitting the party, but I think that if people want change, it's something you have to work harder for than that. Lately there's been a virtual army of Internet activists who've been rising up to challenge the party on to bigger things. We've also seen an unprecendented level of giving. The quote that I put up on the top is completely fabricated. I put it there to see how many people respond to it in earnest without even reading the rest of this post. Only time will tell if we maintain the party unity and go on to victory in '06 and '08, whether we run Hillary Clinton or Wesley Clark or someone else.

15. It helps that the internets is sort of "drive by"
Like fast food. Like reading the paper only for the headlines.

It does help to read the whole thing sometimes though, doesn't it.

What will be even more appalling is when people start quoting this as if someone actually said it. And you won't be able to correct them either.

Like liberal lab rats. And they're sure going for that cheese.

22. Well, I've been guilty of just skimming a post before, so..
I have to agree that reading something the whole way through certainly helps.

The beauty of this is that the quote is so believable. I'm no fan of the DLC but I am a fan of an entertaining flame war, especially one so artfully crafted and sparked as this. ;) :D

Edited on Thu Aug-25-05 05:41 PM by Q
...in that they expose the character of the author.

But in the end...they signify nothing but boredom and prejudice.

Incidentally...the DLC probably didn't mind 'internet activism' until untold numbers of Democrats found their website and started giving them hell for their anti-progressive views.

23. Actually, this one would seem to be more of an experiment
Do many people reading on an internet message board read past the first line of a post? No, they don't. An interesting point above and beyond politics, it reminds us that in the communication biz, have your main point in the first sentence, because it's likely that folks won't read much past that.

If they did, they'd find that the quote is fabricated.

would get him kicked out of the DLC in a split second. He brings a sensible approach to issues of war and peace. He's no pacifist but he's no hawk either.

the "Corporate-owned Media" would get him a trip to the DLC woodshed.

Wes is so much more "Liberal" than many here would like to think, and proudly so. He doesn't back away from that label. He owns it. The DLC would never put up with that, either.

39. Read the paragraph after the quote.
and you will find that the quote was fabricated.

The poster had a theory that no one would read the rest of his post after that first sentence, even though the rest of his post explains what he was doing. They would just react.

And they did.

Get. it?

43. I read the entire post
and I don't understand why people who supposedly support Hillary Clinton and/or Wes Clark bother to bait and insult fellow Dems instead of building the party and helping develop good public policy.

I take politics pretty seriously, apparently others don't. Perhaps you should consider how your actions reflect on the candidates you support.

The whole DLC issue is just shadow-boxing. DLC has no real power, none at all with the electorate. They also have no new ideas. I should know, I used to be a member many years ago.

Maybe you guys should consider moving these discussions to the DU Lounge or something, since you don't seem very serious.

47. (shrug) I don't support the DLC
I do support not reacting to fabricated quotes and reading whole posts. That's my main perspective in this thread.

I'm not finding much in the way of constructive debate in these types of threads for the most part. So I completely bypassed the point the OP was making about the DLC and went straight for his hypothesis that people wouldn't read far enough down to see that the quote was fabricated and that they were reacting to nothing.

I agree with you on the shadowboxing issue. They have no real power. So demonizing and daily threads about them are getting QUITE tedious.

"it's also frustrating seeing what could be such a useful place such as this for real-life activists to exchange useful information and do work, turn into this rah-rah fest for people who don't do much, and thus probably chase away people who could be doing useful things with it." (to be fair, i added the bolding to highlight certain phrases)

it's interesting to know that you think people here "don't do much" ... from your other thread, you obviously had no idea what i do ... i wonder how you know about all the other DU'ers ...

please let me know if i've misquoted you in any way or taken anything you said out of context ... i tried to be as accurate as possible ...
