A very intelligent conservative friend of mine told me about this "advertisement". He was absolutely appalled that the Left would air an ad like this. When he told me about it, I was extremely skeptical so I looked it up and found this post on the Media Matters for America web site.

For those of you who wonder whether intelligent people might have taken it as a real advertisement, here's a good example. This person is absolutely not a "moron", and he was misled.

All of the sighing and huffing and puffing by Limbaugh before it was played made it sound as though it was legitimate. I think that my friend took it exactly as Limbaugh hoped he would. I wonder how many people have been told by word of mouth that this was a real advertisement by people who truly believed that it was real.

On edit: Here's a link to where Limbaugh "explains" the situation two days later:

2. It wasn't that Limbaugh was representing the "ad" as an advertisement...
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 01:08 AM by I Have A Dream
it was that he was playing it for his audience so that they were aware that such an ad exists. (Even though it didn't really exist.)

6. Additional information.
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 12:36 PM by I Have A Dream
This morning, when I told my friend who told me about the "commercial" that the "commercial" was fake, he told me that he didn't even hear it on the Limbaugh show. Therefore, it's now taken a life of its own out there in right-wing propaganda land. This really scares me.

8. You have to ask yourself, "Why are they doing this"?
Answer: Because they can!

With today political climate, the Right Wing has a pass on every underhanded trick in the book. These people in power have no respect for nobody including their own self. This will be their undoing because, this crap can only go so far even with God on your side (or somebody purportedly like him).

7. Thanks for your efforts, ... Dream.
This is really important stuff because not identifying these advertisements as parody is an obvious abuse of the First Ammendment, the public airwaves and the public trust. I think Limbaugh only 'fessed up after being outed by Media Matter. Hooray for them and good for you.

11. Yes, I did tell him.
Please see message 6 above, which contains additional informaiton.

It was really strange. When I told my friend, he seemed really weird in reference to how he was treating me. He didn't even seem as though he knew me. I made it really clear that I wasn't telling him this to make him be wrong but rather because it was a lie and also because he was so upset about it.

I don't know whether he acted this way towards me because he was embarrassed or whether it just totally shook his world view, but it will be interesting to see how he treats me in the future. (I really couldn't have been more polite or non-agressive about how I told him; he is a friend that I really care about.) However, he had to believe that what I was saying was true because the site has the link to Limbaugh's show where he's saying it in his own voice.

be treated like a tool.

15. You'd think that this would be the case...
However, as you know, the right gets away with almost anything that they do.

It's like when right-wing radio host Glenn Beck discussed killing Michael Moore on the air. That was freedom of speech. If we had done the same thing to Ann Coulter or someone like her, we would have been fined for using the public airwaves to incite violence.

Soros should at least sue in order to get the message out tothe general population that this guy lies, maliciously and with no intent on reporting the truth...

Appropriately named, I might add.

18. I really don't know what to say...
It's as though they can say ANYTHING and most American citizens buy it hook, line & sinker.

I so love our country, but I'm so disappointed in so many Americans right now. I never thought that so many Americans could be so naive and so easily swayed.

Everything that's been going on since 2000 shows that we can never rest, and I'm so, so tired. It seems as though we're going backwards, and all of the positive changes that we've made over the last 4 decades are going to swept away over time. The right is such a patient, tenacious group of thugs -- they like this kind of stuff. Personally, always having to fight like this sucks the live force out of me, but there's nothing to do but continue to fight.
