What kind of an idiot would vote against childprotection locks on handguns
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 11:36 AM by pirhana
Anyone else watching the senate right now???

KOHL has proposed a bi-partisan bill for child locks to be sold with all handguns.

The vote is going on right now, will post the results when avb.

btw - it's all those 'pro-lifers' that are voting NO.

1. it's not a bill requiring locks to be on guns at all times right?
just that a lock has to come with a gun that is sold. I don't really see the harm in this. The NRA must have their claws wrapped around some senators really tight

3. The lock will be sold with it.
It will be up to the person that has it to use it.

And hopefully anyone with a child would.

2. Why should I have to pay for more locks?
I aleady have a gun safe.
I already have several trigger locks.

Why the heck should I have to pay for yet another lock every time I buy a new handgun?

If this idea is so great, leave it to the states. A few have already passed laws like this.

5. Because each gun needs a lock.
Not everyone has a gun safe; and I'll bet that you do not constantly leave each gun in the safe.

6. Each of my guns does not "need" a lock.
The ones that are in the safe are fine as is. No additional trigger locks are needed.

The ones that are stored outside the safe are kept loaded. I would never consider putting trigger locks on these guns for two reasons. First, trigger locks are especially unsafe on a loaded gun, since nothing should be inserted into the trigger guard. Second, a lock would impede rapid access to the guns.

14. My stepfather also had his guns locked up and his 10 yr old
great grandson apparently figured out how to get in, came in the living room pointing the gun at my stepfather. Thank God it was unloaded. I'm sure you feel your guns are safe where they are; so did my stepfather.

16. If the gradson was able to get to a locked up gun do you think
he might be able to undo the trigger lock? I can pop the best of them off with a screwdriver in seconds.

18. By the time we have 10-year olds in the house...
They will have been trained to ASK before handling one of my guns. No reason to have to break the lock, I'll be happy to show them.

15. You're more likely to shoot yourself with your own gun
or shooting someone else with it in a domestic dipute, or getting shot WITH it, than you are shooting someone in self defense.

17. Kellermann?
I suppose you are referencing Kellermann's "43 times" study?

I, and many others, disagree with his methodology and conclusions.

However, using his methodology, you are 99 times more likely to have a homicide or suicide in your home NOT involving a firearms then to kill someone NOT using a firearm. That makes having one around twice as safe as not, no?

19. Question slippery
I've never had a gun so don't know much.

If you dispose of a gun, could you reuse the trigger lock, or change it from one gun to another, or does each trigger lock just fit one gun?

Locks do come in different shapes and sizes, but they are not specific to the gun. As long as it generally fits it will do the job.

Let me pretend for the moment that I strongly agreed with the idea of keeping all guns locked (although I don't). Trigger locks wouldn't be the best way to do so. Here is why I say that:

1: Trigger locks don't prevent the gun from begin loaded.
2: Trigger locks don't prevent the gun from being stolen.
3: Trigger locks don't always prevent a gun from being fired.

A better way to lock a handgun would be to pass a cable lock through the magazine well and ejection port, or through the cylinder hole for a revolver. This would address points 1 and 3 at the least.

P.S: This locks is fairly typical - nothing specific to any gun about it:

9. Kohl's amendment is politics - attached to the liability act
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 11:56 AM by SlipperySlope
He is attempting to attach this amendment to the firearms commerce act, hoping to make the act unpalatable to those who want to see it passed unamended.

This is an act I support; because it protects our gunmakers from lawsuits intended to bankrupt them.

If Kohl's amendment is the same as last year's, it also includes limited protection from civil damages if a gun you kept stored locked was used in a crime.
