Foster Families Need Higher Stipend


Florida's foster care families have gone without an increase in their monthly stipends for nearly six years, despite a rising cost of living that makes child-rearing more expensive. The financial pinch is felt fiercely when families approach the shopping season for the start of school and Christmas.

The Tampa Tribune's Sherri Ackerman reported this week that a Valrico couple are quitting the foster care system after struggling to provide for 10 teenage girls in their foster home. When the $300 state checks for school supplies and clothes showed up late, it reinforced their decision.

The $455 monthly stipend for the care and upkeep of a teenager isn't enough to cover food, housing and transportation costs. It's about $200 less than what moderate-income families spend, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's latest statistics on family spending. For younger children, the compensation gap rises to as high as $235 a mont

Sidenote every year Florida has a sales tax holiday for a couple week for people to buy back to school clothes and supplies. The $300 for each foster child CAME TO LATE, in a lot of cases, for them to buy items tax free......

1. When does his 2nd term end anyway?
I don't know how long terms are in Florida.. but is he almost out of there?

Oh.. and kudos to with anyone with a big enough heart to be a Foster family~~ :hug: (Hasn't Jeb's state administration that covers Foster care, etc. sucked since he became Governor?)

Yes, foster care in Florida has always been bad, but it has got worst under Jeb.
