French justice in dock in abuse trial

The verdicts delivered on 65 defendants in France's biggest ever paedophilia trial will not only be considered a judgement on the accused.

The ability of the French authorities to tackle mass child abuse is also in the dock.

The high-profile case, based around a poor neighbourhood in the western French town of Angers, follows a controversial trial last year over a paedophile ring in Outreau, northern France.

In that case, a married couple, Thierry and Myriam Delay, were found guilty of abusing their own children and offering them to relatives and neighbours for abuse.
