Rick Santorum explains Republican "values"
“One of my political heroes, the eighteenth-century British statesman William Wilberforce, argued that hypocrisy can often be a social good.”

3. Wilberforce is his hero!?
"Soapy Sam"'s father.

Samuel Wilberforce was the anti-science bishop who was trounced by Huxley in the famous evolution debates. He earned the nickname "Soapy Sam" by his skills in slipping by opponents in debate.

I'm kind of surprised that InSanitorium wouldn't prefer Bishop Samuel Wilberforce as his hero to his father. The former's character is more like that of the Senator.

5. William Wilberforce was an Abolitionist
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 04:32 PM by atreides1
He was instrumental in the abolition of slavery in England.

He was a very dedicated man, compelled into religious action by his religious faith. Wilberforce wrote "God Almighty has set before me two great objects, the suppression of the Slave Trade and the Reformation of Manners."

He also campaigned against many other ills of his time. Policing, penal reform, medical aid for the poor, education for the deaf, restrictions on the use of child labor, an improvement in the conditions of the Poor Law, action against gambling and the establishment of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, were all part of his legacy.

Did Santorum even read about what this man did, because they are things that the Repuke politicians have very little concern for!
