Conyers delivers petition to "unidentified W. H. aide"...check his fists.

"Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., left, ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, hand-delivers petitions to the White House to an unidentified White House aide, right, standing on the other side of the Northwest Appointment gate of the White House, Thursday, June 16, 2005 in Washington. The petitions are signed by 105 members of Congress and more than 540,000 Americans demanding that President Bush provide a detailed response to the evidence in the Downing Street memos of deceptions about the war in Iraq. 77. Yes, and I'll tell you what else is democracy in action that just
makes me swoon with delight. HIS BLOG! He is the ONE Congressperson that I know of who is making such great use of this wonderful new phenomenon.

Talking DIRECTLY to The People, who get to also talk directly back -- and surely someone is reading the comments. It's a perpetual Town Hall. I LOVE it, and I can't thank Conyers enough for "getting it" about the internet and even more so, blogs.

10 of my friends names..along with some others of course(DU included)...my friend brought it up..it might not be soon but it gives me a warm feeling inside...anyways, he said that because of the 120+ "Congress-critters) that signed the petition and the 540000 people of America that signed it..we wronged the right...we impeached a president illegal war crimes, etc...not for lying to a grand jury about a blowjob with an intern..I feel at peace when I think about that O8)

28. Yes, like Senator Leahy, Representative Conyers is a very
soft spoken and intelligent man. You know when he discusses topics he is careful to not say something inane or flippant. We're lucky to have them both representing The People of the USA.

Conyers is a gentleman and a real class act. There's no need for any posturing on the opposite side of the fence (literally and figuratively).

Yes, astonishing photo. A wake up call that they will fight like hell, whatever they can, they WILL do, to hold onto their power.

Please "hang tough" fellow patriots for this is going to get a whole lot uglier before it *starts* getting better. :patriot:

You mean to tell me that our CONGRESSMEN and WOMEN can't get through the gates to OUR White House to meet with our supposed president? That is the WORST thing I have ever seen. THIS picture should be shown on every single front page of every single paper in this country. I have been mighty pissed for all these years but I can honestly say that is one of the worst things I have ever seen from a resident of the White House in response to the people.

32. But there was nothing new in the DSM
EVERYONE already knew what was in the DSM.

I just got home from my mom's. She is a newshound. We watched every news show on MSNBC or CNN from 4:00 until 8:00. I heard numerous pundits comment on the hearings today and they all said the same thing - this is not news, the public already knew everything that is in the DSM. Some went so far as to say they didn't understand why 'liberal bloggers' were so upset and calling the DSM a smoking gun against the president.

I just kept thinking of those 500,000+ signatures on Conyers petition. Surely over half a million people can't be all wrong. 122 members of Congress can't all be wrong.

This picture is just the icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. Damn you George Bush. Damn you to hell.

41. Hello!
Sickening, I am simply livid over this photo. I have always said that no matter how much you might not like what some of these folks are doing you still owe them a certain amount of respect for being civil servants. Now I have changed that a little because some of them really do not serve us but still, for the supposed president to show such disdain for a member of the Congress has just thrown me over the edge. I can't get over this.

Sure was fun talking to you last night. Your son is really cool. I should have expected that.

50. Yes, he's a great kid
and he had a job interview today so I am feeling good about him.
He really likes DU and he loves coming to the meetups. And we will be back next week cause we like being band groupies.

I may email you the pictures. For some reason, I am not able to set up a photobucket account. grrr But I will give it another shot.

And as for this photo, we are in complete agreement. It just sickened me as well.

113. The thing about the DSM
is that it's documentation. I can tell the truth from a mountain top all day long, but in the age of skeptics, you need a piece of paper written by someone else before they'll believe you.

We all know that dubya wanted a pic of Saddam in his undies to hang on his wall and that the WMD was a smokescreen for what was already in motion.

The DSM is a document confirming what we already knew. That's what is so special about it.

71. It's outrageous but the neocons' masks are slipping and this
is B-A-A-A-D publicity for them, what with people surrounding Conyers, many of them with cameras and videocams

I think they're coming apart at the seams. Their facade is crumbling.

141. I asked 20/20: how about we take one at a time?

Can you do a segment on John Conyers delivery of half million plus signatures to White House aide 'behind the fence with closed fists' yesterday, 6.16.05?

Good deal of information on www.democraticundergound.com, along with pictures.

thanks for your coverage.

They're finding it pretty difficult to laugh this one off, aren't they? Man, damage control must be working day and night to come up with some lame excuse. :rofl:

They could never take away Conyers' dignity because it's part of who he is. :patriot:

29. Great Pic! Email it from Yahoo & a bit better a pic of the Aid FYI
to help get it up as the Most emailed photo. Here's the link: Conyers Presents DSM Petition To WH Aid.

If you want a little bit better look at that Aid here's a bit better a pic (no fists but looks placating): WH Aid Talking through Fence to Conyers.

Actually my first thought was... I sure hope Conyers has lots of copies in safe places.

107. The aide was ordered to refuse delivery
I'm certain of it. Imagine how it would look if he turned his back on Conyers and walked away from accepting the petition? Or if no one met Conyers at the gates at all?

So I'm certain the aide was told to do all he could to get Conyers to not deliver the petition. That's their only way to make believe this isn't happening.

Click on this link: http://tinyurl.com/d76km

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., center, ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is helped by Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., front row 2nd left, and Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee, left, to hand-deliver petitions to the White House, outside the Northwest Appointment gate of the White House, Thursday, June 16, 2005 in Washington. The petitions are signed by 105 members of Congress and more than 540,000 Americans demanding that President Bush provide a detailed response to the evidence in the 'Downing Street Memo'. The so-called 'Downing Street memo' says the Bush administration believed that war was inevitable and was determined to use intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the ouster of Saddam (AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)

What a Day!
Keep the Signatures Coming

I have four categories of things to tell you – three general and one detailed.

First, I could not have achieved the milestone of today’s hearing, letter delivery and other events without your help. DSM is a function of the blogosphere, and throughout the process I have benefitted immeasurably from your comments and support.

Second, today we made abundantly clear, that when rights are being trampled on by the Administration, Democrats will not sit idly by and watch. We can and will act, we can and will investigate, we can and will hold hearings, we can and will take these investigations wherever they lead us.

Third, in terms of my on-line letter, I welcome more signatures, and I will see that every last one is delivered to the president.

Fourth, in terms of the specifics of the day, see below:

• Our long awaited hearing on the Downing Street Minutes was scheduled to begin at 2:30 PM in HC-9 in the basement of the Capitol. This is one of the smallest meeting rooms in the Capitol complex, holding only about 50 people, but was the only room available to us as a result of the GOP’s refusal to make any normal hearing rooms available to us. I got to the hearing at 2PM, and witnessed a phalanx of about ten cameras in the room, with 4 or five more outside the room. There were an additional twenty or so print reporters. About 100 more people – including numerous live bloggers – showed up at our overflow room at the DNC.

• At approximately 2:15 PM, the Republicans scheduled 11 consecutive floor votes, lasting until approximately 4 PM. This is unprecedented in my memory, and if we had allowed it to, it could have ruined the hearing. But a hearty group of Democratic Members helped me carry on, and we were able to continue the hearings through the votes by essentially taking turns running back and forth to the House floor.

• The hearing itself was amazingly informative, moving and informational. Raw Story has my opening statement (along with much more). The witnesses were well informed and helped us create a tremendous record moving forward. Their basic testimony continued until approximately 3 PM, and was followed by a round of questions from most of the 30 members who joined us at one point or another. We also had a surprise guest in the form of Ann Wright, who resigned from the State Department before the start of the Iraq war due to her believe that the intelligence was being fixed and manipulated. At the very end of the hearing all of the family members of deceased soldiers stood up and spoke out. They showed tremendous courage. Bradblog has a great lowdown of the entire hearing, including an audio feed. C-SPAN broadcast live and simulcast and will rebroadcast over the next several days. Radio Pacifica broadcast audio live, and Air America and Randi Rhodes cut in frequently. There was quite a bit of talk among the Members that we had crossed the tipping point on the DSM, and that further disclosures and activism would have a commutative effect on the White House and public opinion. We finished the hearing about 5:30.

• Of course we were not done. About ten members and I proceeded to caravan over to the White House, where we delivered the letter signed by more than 560,000 Americans and 122 Members of Congress demanding answers. There were several hundred protestors at the White House along with least a dozen cameras.. In front of all of these witnesses, the White House staff refused to permit any of us to enter. They did take the petitions, but I would think that sitting Members of Congress deserve a bit more respect.

• There is more. We next proceeded to a rally in front of several hundred more people at LaFayette Park. Many of the witnesses spoke there, along with my friend Tom Hayden and the Members of Congress who had joined me at the White House delivery. Finally, we had to stop as the GOP had scheduled yet more votes on the House floor.

There is much, much more to come, the least of which is we will not stop with this hearing. But I’m exhausted now, so I’ll stop.

.

AND SO WOULD THE REST OF THE CIVILIZED WORLD, Congressman Conyers.

Looking at how tightly his fists are clinched, one can only imagine the torque on his sphincter.

Onward, Congressman Conyers. We are going to prevail.

90. And this happens while Bush screams about "obstructionist" Dems
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/06/20050615-3.html

Press Briefing by Scott McClellan
James S. Brady Press Briefing Room

June 15, 2005

Q Scott, last night the President excoriated the Democrats as obstructionists; today he painted the inaction in Congress on the energy bill as a disservice to the American people. There seems to be more than a little bit of frustration that has permeated his rhetoric as of late.

MR. McCLELLAN: I think the American people expect better from their elected leaders. And what you're seeing too often is that the Democratic leadership is standing in the way of moving forward on issue after issue, as the President said last night. The President is committed to getting things done, and he's committed to working across partisan lines to do so. But in order to get things done you have to have leaders that are committed to working with you. And I think too often now we're seeing that Democratic leaders are more interested in obstructing progress and blocking action.

Q So is he getting frustrated at the way that his second term agenda is stalled in Congress?

MR. McCLELLAN: No, I don't think the President looks at it that way. I think the President believes very strongly that we should focus on the big priorities of the American people, and that we should work together to get things done.

In the first term, there was a lot of talk that we couldn't get things done on the big priorities, and we did. We got a lot done when it came to getting our economy growing by passing tax cuts. They were needed, and we got them passed. People said we wouldn't get them passed. People said we couldn't get Medicare modernization passed; we did. Now we're about to -- or we're in the process of moving forward on getting seniors their prescription drug coverage and better choices when it comes to their health care. People said that we couldn't move forward on trade promotion authority. People said that we weren't going to get things on other important priorities, as well, in the first term, but we did. And we've made some progress in this session of Congress.

But too often lately, you're seeing Democratic leaders holding up the stop sign and saying "no" to everything that we're working to achieve on behalf of the American people. And that's unfortunate. The American people really expect better. They want their elected leaders to talk about what they're for, and put forward ideas for solving problems, instead of standing in the way of solving those problems.

Q Is the President concerned that he's taking the heat in terms of poll numbers and public perception because of what's happening up in Congress?

MR. McCLELLAN: The President is leading the way when it comes to acting on our nation's biggest priorities. And the American people -- that's what the American people expect us to do here in Washington, D.C. And I think the American people reject those who simply say no and stand in the way of getting things done.

The Republican Party, under the President's leadership, is the one who -- or the one that is putting forward ideas and putting forward plans for solving problems. That's why we're working with Congress to pass a comprehensive piece of energy legislation. That's why we're working with Congress to move forward on strengthening and saving Social Security for future generations. That's why we're working with Congress to move forward on a free trade agreement for the Central American nations and the Dominican Republic. That's why we're working with Congress to move forward on a appropriations bill that keep us on track to cut the deficit in half over the next five years.

These are important priorities for the American people. And we've made some progress on these issues and it's time for Democratic leaders to stop blocking those efforts. And that's the point the President is making.

Q His direct confrontational approach that we heard last night, is that something that you'll hear mostly at fundraisers, or is that going to be part of his standard speech from now on?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, it depends on the actions by the Democrats. The Democrats need to come to the table with ideas and show more of a willingness to work together to get things done, instead of simply saying "no" to progress on important priorities for the American people. That's not the way you gain the trust of the American people, as the President pointed out last night. The American people want us to get things done. The President is going to continue doing what he has done, which is elevate the discourse, put forward a positive and optimistic agenda for our future, and reach out to others who want to get things done.

We appreciate the leadership in Congress, the Republican leadership, because they're trying to push forward on important priorities. We're moving forward on energy legislation. The Congress is holding hearings on Social Security reform. The Senate committee -- the Senate Finance Committee, last night, had an informal vote on the Central American Free Trade Agreement and passed it with majority support. So there are a number of issues that we need to continue to move forward on and get done.

Q Well, does he think it's productive and that it will make the Democrats more cooperative by calling them the "party of 'no'" and "obstructionists"?

MR. McCLELLAN: The President is going to continue to focus on getting things done and focus on the priorities that he has outlined for the American people.

Q I'm talking about the tactics --

MR. McCLELLAN: I know. And that's -- I'm telling you what he's going to do. The President is going to continue pushing to get things done and continue to focus on the big priorities. The big priorities are continuing to move forward on winning the war on terrorism and spreading freedom, to defeat the ideology of hatred and oppression, and continuing to move forward on economic security here at home, and to extend -- or to promote lasting prosperity.

We have made significant progress when it comes to getting our economy growing. Our economy has seen sustained economic growth. We're in a sustained period of expansion when it comes to creating jobs and economic opportunity. We need to continue to act to build upon that.

That's why the President was highlighting the energy legislation today. The President put forward a comprehensive energy plan four years ago, and Congress has yet to enact that. We are hopeful that we can get that done this year before the President -- before Congress recesses this August.

So the President is going to continue focusing on the people's priorities and focusing on getting things done. And it's time for Democratic leaders to stop trying to block efforts to move forward on the American people's priorities.

Q Well, we're talking about changing the tone and trying to improve relations. Do you think that the kind of statements that you're making and that he made last night are helpful in that regard?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, the President has always worked to elevate the discourse, Terry. One of the things that he was disappointed in the first term about was that we weren't able to do more to change the tone here in Washington, D.C. It's a bitter and partisan environment that exists here in this town. The President is committed to changing that. And that's why he has always focused on the big issues facing the American people, and moving forward to solve the problems facing this country. We have made great progress over the course of his first four-and-a-half years in office, but he intends to continue leading and acting on those big priorities.

Q But does he believe that adding to the name-calling helps to change the tone?

MR. McCLELLAN: Let me keep going. I'll come back to you, John. You've already had your question. I'll come back to you.

Q How do you square the fact that the President says we need to end --

MR. McCLELLAN: But, John -- wait a second. What are you referring to? The President simply --

Q You can come back to me later.

MR. McCLELLAN: But it's incorrect what you said. The President -- the President is calling it like it is. And the American people expect better.

Go ahead.

Q The President says he wants to see an end to the partisan bickering, at the same time he is singling out Democrats, not congressional leaders overall, and using definitely stepped-up language in front of a GOP $2,500-a-plate dinner last night. How do you reconcile those two things?

MR. McCLELLAN: Democratic leaders are the ones who are too often standing in the way of progress. And the President is going to call it like it is. He is focused on a positive and optimistic vision for the American people. That's what he's put forward. Democratic leaders too often right now are simply saying "no" and offering no ideas, no solutions. The American people want better.

2). Inquiry moves ahead anyway

3). Bush agrees to "grant an audience," not under oath, with Cheney in tow, and no transcripts produced from the encounter.

As you all did, I expected the White House to allow a group of Congressmen entry into the White House. What a lack of disrespect!!!

What is is interesting is you can just play with McClellan's words and it makes a lot of sense:

MR. McCLELLAN words my way: I think the American people expect better from their elected leaders. And what you're seeing too often is that the Republican leadership is standing in the way of moving forward on issue after issue, as Congressman John Conyers said last night. ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT EXHIBITED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN THE NAME OF ITSELF AND OF ALL OF THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AGAINST GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN MAINTENANCE AND SUPPORT OF ITS IMPEACHMENT AGAINST HIM FOR HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANOURS.

ARTICLE 1

In his conduct of the office of President of the United States, George W. Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has committed the act of fraud with respect to the conception, implementation, and execution of a policy of illegal war against the sovereign state of Iraq, culminating in Operation Iraqi Freedom, in that:

On and before October 1, 2002, George W. Bush, in concert with the Vice President, Secretaries of State and Defense, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and others, did knowingly and willfully falsify, conceal, or cover up a material fact; and further made materially false, fictitious, and fraudulent statements and representations; and furthermore, made and used false writings and documents knowing the same to contain any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or entry; knowingly and with intent to defraud the United States, and agencies thereof, for the purpose of securing a resolution passed by the United States Senate on that date authorizing the use of force against the sovereign state of Iraq. Subsequent thereto, George W. Bush, using the powers of his high office, engaged personally and through his close subordinates and agents, in a course of conduct or plan designed to delay, impede, and obstruct the investigation of such illegal activity; to cover up, conceal and protect those responsible; and to conceal the existence and scope of other unlawful covert activities.

The means used to implement this course of conduct or plan included one or more of the following:

1. making false or misleading statements to lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States;

2. withholding relevant and material evidence or information from lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States;

3. approving, condoning, acquiescing in, and counseling witnesses with respect to the giving of false or misleading statements to lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States and false or misleading testimony in duly instituted judicial and congressional proceedings;

4. interfering or endeavouring to interfere with the conduct of investigations by the Department of Justice of the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Congressional Committees;

5. approving, condoning, and acquiescing in, the surreptitious payment of substantial sums of money for the purpose of obtaining the silence or influencing the testimony of witnesses, potential witnesses or individuals who participated in such unlawful activities;

6. endeavouring to misuse the Central Intelligence Agency, an agency of the United States;

7. disseminating information received from officers of the Department of Justice of the United States to subjects of investigations conducted by lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States, for the purpose of aiding and assisting such subjects in their attempts to avoid criminal liability;

8. making or causing to be made false or misleading public statements for the purpose of deceiving the people of the United States into believing that a thorough and complete investigation had been conducted with respect to the military threat posed by the sovereign state of Iraq; and

9. endeavouring to cause prospective defendants, and individuals duly tried and convicted, to expect favoured treatment and consideration in return for their silence or false testimony, or rewarding individuals for their silence or false testimony.

In all of this, George W. Bush has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.

Wherefore George W. Bush, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.

143. You know it's serious when msm refuses to cover Conyers
but then it took 15-18 months before articles of impeachment began against Nixon!
Trouble is the present day media is obviously controlled by this administration allowing Bush to evade and hide whenever he needs to,
the fact that Bushco hired journalists to ask preplanned questions speaks volumes in itself.

Viva John Conyers!!

As for delivering it to his superiors, I'm sure he knows better than to do that--they might not actually shoot the messenger, but he'd certainly lose the job that pays for those nice suits.
