Buenos Dias, les habla Alvaro Cifuentes, Presidente del Caucus Hispano en el
Partido Demócrata. Hoy dia quiero contarles de mi profunda preocupacion como
Hispano y como padre de familia con la falta de liderazgo del Presidente Bush,
y con el extremismo de los Republicanos en el Congreso.
Veo con gran disgusto como el Presidente Bush está aniquilando las
oportunidades en nuestras comunidades y haciendole más dificial a nuestras
familias que logren tener una vida mejor.
Los Hispanos estamos perdiendo bajo Bush, sufrimos de mayor desempleo, menos
cuidado médico y nuestro derecho a una vejez digna está en peligro por los
planes de privatización del seguro social del Presidente Bush. Además, hasta
las pensiones por las que muchos hemos trabajado y a las que hemos contribuido
están bajo ataque por esta administración.
El país entero está sufriendo por la falta de liderazgo del Presidente Bush, y
su agenda que favorece a los intereses especiales, y que deja a las familias
trabajadoras atras.
Hoy dia pagué $2 dólares con 49 centavos por un galón de gasolina. Cuanto pagó
usted? Los precios de la gasolina siguen casi un 50 por ciento más altos de lo
que eran cuando Bush entro en funciones. Mientras tanto las diez compañías
petroleras más grandes, solo en el año 2004, se beneficiaron de más de 100 mil
millones de dólares en ganancias.
Por eso me sentí tan decepcionado esta semana cuando el Presidente Bush
aprovechó una rueda de prensa para promover su proyecto de ley de política de
energía. En vez de usar ese proyecto de ley para aliviarle la carga a nuestras
familias, el Presidente Bush le quiere ofrecer miles de millones de dólares en
reducciones de impuestos a compañías de energía, y permitirle a las mismas que
contaminen las fuentes de agua alrededor de nuestro país sin repercusiones.
Y en cuanto a las otras tres prioridades del Presidente? Hasta los mismos
Republicanos están en desacuerdo. Pocos se quieren hundir con su plan de acabar
con el Seguro Social. Están en contra de sus presupuestos irresponsables, y se
le oponen en el tratado de libre comercio CAFTA.
A pesar de que intentó nadar en contra de la marea, está claro que el
Presidente Bush ha perdido control de su partido. Más y más su presencia pierde
relevancia. Peor aún, ha dejado el partido en control de extremistas que nos
atacan a los hispanos, y a las familias trabajadoras con tal de ayudar a sus
contribuyentes de campaña.
Por nuestra parte, los Demócratas seguimos compremetidos de todo corazon para
seguir luchando por usted, siempre dandole la bienvenida a los Hispanos en
nuestro partido y en nuestro pais, y luchando por brindarle las mejores
oportunidades a nuestras familias.

4, 2005. Cifuentes will talk about President Bush's increasingly clear status
as a lame duck president, his special interest driven agenda, and the
disconnect of that agenda with the realities facing Americans in their daily
lives.

ENGLISH
Good morning, this is Alvaro Cifuentes, Chair of the Democratic Party's
Hispanic Caucus. Today I'd like to tell you about my deep concern as a Hispanic
and as a father, with President Bush's lack of leadership and with the
extremism of Republicans in Congress.
It is with great disappointment that I see President Bush eliminating
opportunities in our communities and making it harder for our families to
secure a better life.
We Hispanics are losing under Bush, enduring greater unemployment, less health
care, and with our right to retire with dignity in danger because of President
Bush's plans to privatize Social Security. Even the pension plans that so many
of us have worked for and have contributed to are under attack by this
administration.
The entire country is suffering because of President Bush's lack of leadership,
and his agenda that favors special interests and leaves families behind.
Today I paid $2 dollars and 49 cents for a gallon of gasoline. How much did you
pay? Gas prices are still almost 50 percent higher than when Bush took office.
In the meantime the 10 biggest oil companies, in 2004 alone, benefited from
more than 100 billion dollars in profits.
That's why I was so disappointed this week when President Bush used a press
conference to promote his energy bill. Instead of using that bill to alleviate
the burden on our families, President Bush wants to offer billions in tax cuts
to energy companies, and allow those companies to contaminate our water
supplies around the country with no repercussions.
And on the President's other three priorities? Even Republicans disagree. Few
want to sink themselves with his plan to end Social Security. They oppose his
irresponsible budgets, and they oppose the CAFTA free trade agreement.
Although he tried to swim against the current, it's clear that President Bush
has lost control of his party. More and more his presence is becoming
irrelevant. Worst yet, he has left the party in control of extremists who
attack us Hispanics, and attack working families in order to help their
campaign contributors.
Democrats remain committed with all our hearts to continue to fight for you,
always welcoming Hispanics within our party and within our country, and
fighting to offer our families the best opportunities.
